Simple Accomodations, Great Location & Value

A great spot to launch out to see the rest of Holland. A family-run hotel, our hosts at the Amadeus were very accommodating & the generous breakfast overlooking the Grote Markt was a great way to start the day. The staff was very nice & our rooms were always tidy & clean. The lack of central air conditioning was made up for by the late nights sitting outside enjoying the strolling muscicians & people watching at one of several cafes that line the market square: in the summer, the sun stays up until 10:30.

Also, the availability of inexpensive internet service either using your wireless laptop connection or accessing one of the hotel's cafe computers was a blessing when you've got emails to send, photos to transfer from your digital camera & upload to your blog or if you just want to check information for your day trips or return travel plans.

I would highly recommend this lovely little hotel in Haarlem. Again our hosts & the staff were more than accomodating & I hope to be able to stay there again.

Unique Quality: Located in central Haarlem, the Amadeus is a stone's throw from several historical sites, including the local senate house & St. Bavokerk, a beautiful cathedral with a haunting pipe organ once played by both Amadeus & Handel. Not 500 yards away is the Ten Boom Museum & Watch Shop, home, business & hiding place for Corrie Ten Boom, her family & those needing refuge from the horrors of the Nazi occupation during World War II.

Shops, banking & food are readily available right around the hotel; highly recommended are Cafe Doria, L'Anders, the La Place Cafe at the top of the Vroom & Dreesman department store & the tiny but well-appointed souvenir shop right next to St. Bavo. The train & bus stations that connect you with the rest of Holland are within a straight 10 minute walk & many destinations are less than a 30 minute rail ride including Amsterdam, the beach or The Hague. There is parking nearby, but travel by one of the other means of transportation available is encouraged; it just seems easier to get around by foot, pedal, rail or bus.

Don't let the availability of shops & stores fool you though. From the Amadeus, quiet neighborhood streets and local color are literally just a side street away from the busier shopping areas. On most Saturdays & Mondays, the Grote Markt is transformed into a true market square, with tents & vendors selling everything from flowers to sheets, hand carved Indonesian instruments to Nepalese-made clothing or local cheese & produce.

Staying at the Amadeus felt safe & we were provided easy opportunities to see more of what The Netherlands is about. We found the relaxed pace of staying in Haarlem much more inviting than rushing around & the expense of staying in Amsterdam.

Quaint and great location

The stay was nice. The room was a bit small, as was the elevator to get the luggage up to the rooms. But the breakfasts were very good and it's all you'd want from a place you are basically just sleeping at.

Unique Quality: Its located right in the Market Square. Prime spot for going anywhere in the city or just sitting and watching people.

Hotel located on Haarlem's Grote Markt

The Hotel Amadeus is located on Haarlem's Grote Markt, but despite it's ideal location, it is not particularly expensive.

The rooms are comfortable, if somewhat small, and the bar area looks out onto the Grote Markt.

It is only a 5-10 minute walk from the train station, and Haarlem is only a 15 minute train journey from Amsterdam, so this hotel represents an alternative (cheaper) option to staying in Amsterdam itself.

Hotel Amadeus.

You can find something cheaper if you are willing to walk a short distance from the center but I was pressed for time and the pub crawl was calling so I coughed up the fifty bucks for a singe with breakfast and got ready for da spanky.

Unique Quality: This lovely hotel is right on the main market square so you cannot beat the location. It has a nice outside cafe and a cosy pub with Internet access.
