Travel Tips for Hoofddorp

Ice Skating

by martin_nl

The last two weeks of December and the first week of January you can skate the ice on the Raadhuisplein in Hoofddorp. This event takes place evey year. You can bring your own skates, but I think you don't have them with you standard ;-) But you can also rent them, so that saves you a lot of carrying in case you did have them with you all the time.

Cruquius steam pumping station

by martin_nl

Situated a few kilometers from Hoofddorp is Cruquius. This little town is home to the Cruquius steam pumping station. The machine has recently been renovated and it is working again!! See how it pumps up water, just like it did 150 years ago. Right now the building houses a museum, that informs you on how land was and is cultivated in the Netherlands. It is very interesting and you will learn something about the history of the Netherlands too!

To get to Cruquius you can take bus 140 from the train station of Hoofddorp and Haarlem and get out at Cruquius Museum.

"Hoofddorp - Capital of the Haarlemmermeer polder"

Translated into English Hoofddorp means Main Village. Well, Hoofddorp is the civil center of the Haarlemmermeer polder, an area that used to be a big inner lake.

In 1853 after the creation of the Haarlemmermeer polder it was decided to construct two villages: Kruisdorp and Venneperdorp, both situaded in the center of the polder.

At july 11, 1855 the Haarlemmermeer got civil rights and at november 12, 1868 it was decided to rename Kruisdorp into Hoofddorp. The old name remains in the streetname Kruisweg in the heart of Hoofddorp. The Hoofdvaart (main canal) is situated rectangular to the Kruisweg and connect Hoofddorp to the Lijnden pump station.

In 1856 the windmill De Eersteling was build.

Hoofddorp is home to the Polderhouse (control of the polder waterworks) and the Raadshuis (City Hall of the Haarlemmermeer polder).

After 1960 Hoofddorp expanded with Plan Eyke (1964), Kalorama (1967) and Graan voor Visch (1970).

Later more suburbs were developped like Pax, Bornholm, Overbos, Toolenburg, Boseilanden and Floriande.

Hoofddorp is known from the story of Dik Trom by writer/teacher C. Joh. Kieviet (1858 - 1931).

"History of the Haarlemmermeer polder"

Through the centuries storms at the Lake South of the city of Haarlem claimed more and more land and shipping was dangerous too. As early as the 1600's plans were made to control the lake. It lasted till 1840 after the invention of the steam pump, that a start was made to reclaim the land. Three big pump stations were build along a "ringvaart" (the outer water ring canal). In 1852 after 800 million cubic meters of water were pumped out the polder took shape.

Farmers from all over the Netherlands started on land they had to rent from rich landowners. It took some 50 years before profits were made and a decent living could be guaranteed.

After WWII development went fast with the ever increasing business around the Schiphol Airport.

Home of Mysteryland

by coolbananas

Hoofddorp is the place where I've lived my whole life. It's not a very spectacular place, because it mainly consists of a big business area with heaps of offices and an growing amount of newly built homes.

Every now and then there's some excitement, with the biggest event called 'Mysteryland' as my personal highlight. This is a huge outdoor dance event which takes place in the former "Floriade' area. In 2007 the party was completely sold out and visited by 60000 people!

For more info and pictures check out 'Things to do' on this page.

Every year it's great to walk around the festival area. With around 16 different stages there's plenty of choice!

Hoofddorp the city in between cities

by martin_nl

"Ideal location for a lot of sights"

Hoofddorp is not known to many people. Not that strange considering that there is hardly anything to see. Haarlemmermeer is the community, Hoofddorp is located in. Other places are Cruquius, Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, Nieuw Vennep and my hometown Zwaanshoek. It is very strategically placed right in between Haarlem, Amsterdam, Aalsmeer which is the centre of the flower industry and one of Europe's biggest airports, Schiphol.

Because of this location many big international companies have big offices in Hoofddorp or the Haarlemmermeer, and even more are coming. Many visitors that spend their time in the Netherlands also stay a night in one of the airport hotels, from which a lot are situated in Hoofddorp.

"Cultivating the land"

The year 2002 is the year that Haarlemmermeer is 150 years old, which means that about 150 years ago Haarlemmermeer was a lake, the Lake of Haarlem. Already in 1617 the first plans were made to drain the lake. It wasn't untill 1845 that the first steam pumping station called the Leeghwater started to actually drain the wild water of this big lake. Four years later in 1849 two more of these steam pumping stations (Cruquius and De Lynden)started to work. Finally, in 1852, after 7 years of pumping the bottom of the lake is finally reached. The water is now in a canal called the Ringvaart, which is in between dikes and is surrounding the whole new area Haarlemmermeer.
