My mother was born in Schagen and after reading an advertisement in our local paper, we decided for a short break to this little town in the province of North Holland. We ended up booking another -more expensive package (Culinary Castle Arrangement) - than was offered in the paper.

We had to travel by train, which was quite convenient because the hotel is located at the central square of the town, on walking distance (max. 10 minutes). Be aware the hotel doesn’t have a private parking place, so if travelling by car you will have to find a public parking area.
Located in the center of town means shops (included a remarkable large shopping mall), bars and restaurants are very close.

The hotel exists of two buildings: the main building with the reception, restaurant, café/bar and the standard rooms; luxury rooms are located in Slot (Castle) Schagen. Our arrangement included one of these ‘castle’ rooms. To be honest we couldn’t discover a lot of luxury (except the bath in our bathroom) in our room and it looked as an average ‘Best Western’ room. Everything was clean and had the normal amenities, although we personally were not really happy with the box spring mattress.
The castle is situated behind the main building, which means you have to walk outside about 100 meters, which can be inconvenient with bad weather.

There was one three course diner included in our package, which we had in the hotel restaurant ‘De Gastheer’. The food was good, although for the main course we had only a choice between two kinds of (only) meat.
Breakfast is also served in the main building and is buffet style; it offers a variety of bread, fillings, yoghurt, tea, coffee and juices. Just a pity the bread, as well as the fruit, was not too fresh.

All together we are slightly disappointed (not about our trip) and feel we did pay too much for our stay in this average hotel.

Directions: City center of Schagen on the main square.
