Under the smoke of Amsterdam
The town of Uithoorn exists of two villages: Uithoorn and De Kwakel. Together they have nearly 30.000 inhabitants. De Kwakel is the smallest of the two, with a real rural character, while Uithoorn has an urban character. A lot of people from Amsterdam moved here over the last few decades, since Uithoorn is only 20 km. away from there. We have Schiphol airport and the flower-auction of Aalsmeer very nearby, a lot of inhabitants work there. I came to live here in 1982, at the age of 18, after being born and raised in Amsterdam. I like to live here, close to the city for shopping and entertainment, but quiet enough to raise two children without the "dangers" of the big city. Uithoorn itself doesn't have much exciting sights, but it's very central, with good busconnections, and I would say the prizes of staying here are better than in Amsterdam. You can always contact me if you want to have more details about the hotels around here.
Uithoorn and De Kwakel both have a fort, being remains of the defense line of Amsterdam.
