The Bergkerk
by OlafS
The Bergkerk is a Gothic church with a Romanesque double tower-front. Its name means something like 'the church on the mountain'. Inside are art exhibitions but as I didn't bother to go inside I can't say anything about that, except that you aren't allowed to make pictures. The neighbourhood around the church, the Bergkwartier, is nice too, with many medieval houses left standing. Oh, the 'mountain' to which the name refers is only a hill, but in this rather flat country it is a mountain, relatively speaking.
St.Nicolaas
by MATIM
I found this gable stone on one of the houses near the Bergkerk (mountain church).
It shows St. Nicolaas the patron saint of the church.
The three bags with money are symbolic for the 1,5 million used for rebuilding the church.
The gable stone is made by sculptor J. van Rooyen.
Women's prison
by MATIM
At the end of this nice street (Walstraat is the women's prison.
The prison was used from 1818 till 1905.
After the liberation in 1945 female members of the NSB, an organisation in the Netherlands that was with the German, kept prison here. That is why they call it the women prison.
Just when we passed the prison a women escaped by hanging sheets like a rope outside the window!!!
