Travel Tips for Ommen
Once a wealthy trading and Hanzetown
Though one wouldn't say so, Ommen belonged once to the economicaly important Hanze treaty and has an official Hanze-town status. Trade, done by ships that sailed over the Vecht towards more important Hanze treaty towns such as Zwolle and Kampen, made Ommen grow in early medieval times and also made the town get cityrights in 1248. Now-a-days the town mainly lives from tourism in the green "Vecht" valley.
Honouring the greatest long distance skater
One of the greatest (winter)events in the Netherlands is for sure the Elfstedentocht (11 cities tour). This rather irregular sports event that actually is a ice skating tour over 200 kiloemters along the 11 cities in the province of Friesland, can be counted to the hardest sport activities around the world, especially that one from 1963, which was in ice cold circumstances with temperatures far below zero and a fierce icy wind from the North West. The winner that year became Reinier Paping and he lived quite a while in Ommen. The town commemorates this sportive hero with a plaque at the former townhall and present tin figures museum.
Canoeing over the river Vecht
Nothing is more pleasurable then a canoe trip over the river Vecht to find out what lovely region this is. The calm river flow is suitable for everyone, also people that never have rowed in a canoe before. Can be rented by "Rederij Peters" in Ommen.
Funny statues within the town
Ommen, like many other town and village, also has it's budget for art objects. In the central square of Ommen, the market (Markt), are a few that are made for Ommen at it's 750 anniversary in 1998 (since 1248 the town has cityrights). Artist Iris Le Rutte symbolised three historical figures of Ommen, of which in the picture the "Goat on the Egg" and the "Black Horse", are legendary ones. If anyone can tell me about these legends, it would make me very happy. On the internet I couldn;t find proper information.
A little town not to miss
"Beautiful day driving through Overijssel"
We stopped in Ommen on our way to Vroomshoop. No not Emmen but Ommen, wonderful little town that deserves mentioning. The name caught my eye for sure since it reminded me of the word “omen”… was this a warning?
In the Provincie Overijssel, you will find Ommen near the junction of N348 and N34, on a little highway that I can’t even find the number on the map (the N347 perhaps?).
I don’t really have any tips on Ommen but I would like to share some photos.
