Travel Tips for Steenwijk

UNESCO Heritage site, fine wine, fortifications...

"A UNESCO World Heritage site"

Much to my surprise, Steenwijk harbours a world acclaimed building and park from the Jugendstil period (end 19th century). In the tips you will later find the brilliant cast iron gate that first catches the eye. But moving beyond that gate, nearer the house, you cannot help but exclaim in admiration at this beautiful main entrance door.

"Weekend Warrior Entry"

There are quite a few places around Meppel (main town in the area) that are worth visiting. However, Meppel is on the brink of two provinces, so you would not be able to detect that if you look at my Travel Page.

You could easily cycle between these places. It's a lovely rural area.
Like: Meppel-Staphorst-Giethoorn-Meppel
Or: Meppel-Ruinerwold-Frederiksoord-Vledder-Meppel
Or: Meppel-Steenwijk-Giethoorn-Kolderveen-Meppel
Or: Meppel-Ruinerwold-Kallenkote-Schiphorst-Meppel
Or: Meppel-Staphorst-Zwolle-Meppel

So here goes:

Kolderveen (very rural, dairy farm icecream)
Steenwijk (small town, Unesco heritage site)
Giethoorn (Venice of the north)
Staphorst (beautiful old farms)
Ruinerwold(stone's throw from Meppel)
Kallenkote (Indonesian bird park)
Frederiksoord(colony of welfare)
Vledder(small village, museum of fake art)
Zwolle (largest town in the area)
Meppel (lively nightlife, shopping, printing museum)
Schiphorst (stately home as exclusive hotel/restaurant, stork farm)

This is the former house of my grandmother when she used to live in Steenwijk.

When my grandmother lived here, it looked differently. There used to be no garage between the house and the neighbours. It was an open space for flowers. And the window on top of the house wasn't there either.

When I was little we went in weekends or a holiday to my grandmother.

This water is in front of my grandmothers former house.
When I was little, the houses on the left on the picture weren't there. It used to be fields with grass and cows on it.

At the end of the water, there used to be a small castle. But it is gone now.

This is the church which was standing close to my grandmothers former house.

Shopping street of Steenwijk.

Boschma ice is really NICE and TASTY!!
