When researching B&Bs for our time in the eastern part of the Netherlands, I stumbled upon this place. It sounded really good: located in the middle of the old town, inexpensive, and with a roof terrace. As we wanted to stay there in the beginning of April, we figured we could enjoy the first warm sunrays on the roof terrace, so I booked a room there. It all came quite differently...
March and April had been the coldest in history, so we were not the slightest bit sad when we found out on arrival that there had been a misunderstanding and the roof terrace room was already occupied. Instead, we were given a cosy and rather spacious room in the attic. We were literally sleeping directly "onder de peperbus" - from our room we could see the stars at night and, with a little craning, the Peperbus, Zwolle's famous church spire. It's beautiful sounding carillon is fortunately turned off at night, otherwise it would have been a sleepless night with the bells playing their melody every 15 minutes.
Breakfast was good as well, but if you are very hungry it might be a bit too small. The freshly-made smoothie made up for that, though. Onder de Peperbus is also equipped with a small kitchenette, a fridge and a microwave so that you can cater for yourself if you want to do so. Altogether we found it to be a very friendly place.
Unique Quality: Best of all was the room we stayed in. How often can you actually see the stars from your bed? On the other hand, this might also be the B&Bs only drawback. You see and are seen - there are no curtains or venetian blinds, not even in the bathroom. Prepare for quite a small amount of privacy!
Directions: Central Zwolle, but not exactly easy to find by car. The best would be to park somewhere and then find your way to Ossenmarkt. Drostenstraat branches off behind the church.
