Kiwis living in Holland for 6 months on late life OE!!!

by Willemsen

Hello, My Dutch born husband and I hope to visit the Netherlands, basing ourselves in the Utrecht region Utrecht Amersfoort, Maarsen, from April until October 2011. Any advice on accommodation, easy, difficult expensive? where that is safe etc. etc. and any other useful info would be most welcome. We are aware of the 90 day restriction, and my husband is in the process of regaining his Dutch citizenship.Rgds

You could try to find a rental apartment in one of the cities you mentioned (personally I would prefer Amersfoort). Due to the economic situation (also in the Netherlands) there are quite big problems on the market for houses. Perhaps one of the owners will rent his house for such a time.
Find/contact a estate agent (in Dutch called 'makelaar') in the city/cities you want to stay and talk with him about the possibilities.

Thanks Jaap, thats really helpful. Amersfoort has family links so we shall begin there. Yes we realise accommodation will be the problem, and the most expensive item. We do not need a house there is just two of us, so a small apartment will be fine. But we shall zero in on Amersfoort. Rgds. Owena

The market is low these days, and many houses are for sale for quite some time (though prices have not dropped too much!).
There may be owners that would like to rent out their property while it is on sale. So get in touch with a 'makelaar', also to know your rights and obligations. Since 6 months is a longish time.

Travel Tips for Utrecht

Something a bit different

by jo104

Utrecht has a large conference center, de Jaarbeurs, situated next to the Central station so the city often hosts large conventions so on your visit you may be suprised with an extra-ordinary display or festival.

On my first visit we were treated to an argentine tango display next to the cafe we were sitting outside of. On my second visit Utrecht was full of goths dressed up in their exquisite vintage clothes for the Summer of Darkness weekend festival. Also there was a large Jehovah's Witness conference but as we were out we never came across any door knockers.

Oude Gracht

by Wallace&Murron

Yet again Oude Gracht, and for good reason. It's got a great selection of restaurants. THE most peaceful place (for me) in the world on a hot summers day. Go for a trip on the water on the canal boat (Rondvaart) for an even more unforgettable experience!

Again in Utrecht, like in so...

by DanielF

Again in Utrecht, like in so many other Dutch cities and towns, canals are the center of attraction. The particularity about Utrecht's canals is that they lay quiet below the street level and you can walk down there. They have made a lot of cafés in the basements of the buildings, and by good weatherm the canals will be lined with street cafés.

Postcards? This isn't Amsterdam!

by Mariajoy

Utrecht has streets full of quite trendy little shops - definitely worth having a wander if you are looking for something special... but postcards are somewhat hard to find! I asked an assistant for postcards in a shop where I thought they might have them and she replied quite snootily..."Postcards?? This isn't Amsterdam!!" Nevertheless I did manage to find a few!

Church bells

by OrlandoBR

I asked the nice Utrechtian girl that conducted us on the guided tour of the "dom" how many times she climbed those many hundreds of steps every day... she said about 2 or 3, which means more steps than some people climb on their entire lifetime. On the top there's a bell, which had to ring while we were up there, deafening me for a couple of hours.
