VREELAND, THE DOCTOR'S HOUSE
Travel Tips for Vreeland
The former village 'town hall'
by ATLC
The building was converted into apartments about 20 years ago. Vreeland used to have its own mayor together with the village Nigtevegt. Vreeland now belongs to the community Loenen aan de Vecht which is a village further up the river Vecht. The first time I came into this building, was on Queens Day (30 april) 1983. The village people gathered here for orange cakes and coffee to celebrate this national holiday.
Queens Day in Vreeland
by ATLC
On Queens Day there would be music at the music pavilion on Lindengracht Queens Day was always celebrated by all villagers. There was an active 'Oranjevereniging' (Orange committee) that would organise the day. They'd make a lot of noise at 7 in the morning to wake everyone up and remind them to put out the national flag. Then there would be music and singing at the music pavilion, cake and coffee or even breakfast for everyone. In the afternoon everyone would participate in some games and there would be big fireworks at night, which was often done in the front garden of my house because the villagers could best gather right across the river to watch it.
The doctor
by ATLC
I was 20 something when I woke up in the morning and saw that my face was all swollen. So I went to the doctor who also lived on the Voorstraat and he diagnosed: mumps!
What to do, I asked? Nothing! he replied cheerfully. I came home, went to bed and was really sick for a week or so. Mumps is really terrible when you're an adult. It hurt a lot!
St. Nicholas church
by ATLC
This is the (protestant) church of Vreeland.
The church is frequently used for taping and broadcasting concerts, as it was this afternoon (June 2005) when I heard noises inside and decided to enter. They were just setting up for a new concert.
The choir and pulpit
by ATLC
The church verger was a funny man. He actually never went to church service. He would make everything ready and when the service started he'd go home, shower and walk the dog and be back in time for the end of the service!
