Villa Carmen Sylva
Queen Elisabeth of Romania used to stay in this villa during her stay in The Netherlands in 1889. After her departure, the German owner Carl Erbschloe changed the name of the villa from Villa Maria to Carmen Sylva (the singing wood). This was the pseudonym of the queen under which she wrote poetry and prose.
Quite an interesting woman, this Elisabeth of Wied. Have a look here for bit of her history, and opinions.
The beach below this villa was a favoured spot of Piet Mondriaan who liked to put up his easel there to paint.
When you are up on the dyke path along the beach, you pass this villa, that overlooks the North Sea and the Westerstrand beach.
