Most convenient way (time/money) from Bruge to Vlissingen

by drgirlnyu

Hello, I will be staying in Bruges for a little while and then will need to go to Vlissingen for a conference next month. I will not have a car. How can I go from one to the other. Is it easy to get to the ferry in Breskens from Bruges without a car?

In the summer there's a direct bus: Veolia #14 to the Breskens ferry.

Outside the summer you need to take 3 busses:

From Brugge: De Lijn Oost-Vlaanderen #58 (Brugge - Maldegem)
From Maldegem: Veolia #12 (Maldegem - Oostburg)
From Oostburg: Veolia #3 (Oostburg-Breskens)

Thank you, I will be going there on September 14th. Does that still qualify as summer?

Hi,
From Brugge, you can take bus number 42. It goes from Brugge to Breskens. The bus goes every hour from 6:59 am. You may want to get one of the bus schedules from Brugge station to keep you update.

I think I looked at some outdated info.

Titabell is right; see:

or at the Veolia website:

Just one last remark: The bus service from Brugge to Vlissingen is operated jointly by "De Lijn" and "Veolia". The busses leave every hour, but only the runs done by "De Lijn" carry the number 42, the Veolia runs have number 2. However they will all have "Breskens" on their destination board. Stay on the bus till the stop "Veerhaven", where it's just a few steps to the ferry.

The "De lijn bus" is indicated with the letter A at the timetable of:

Travel Tips for Vlissingen

Coffeeshop Purple

by Joemidwest

There is only one coffeeshop in town and it just happened to be right across the street from Hotel Royal. A Coca Cola, a bowl or two, and a couple of games of Pac Man, can be an enjoyable afternoon or evening.

Sluis – Locks

by penumbra

The patrol craft Wytvliet waits in the Vlissingen locks to enter the Schelde-Rijn-Kanaal (canal). Just opposite the train station, the locks allow boats to traverse the entire peninsula. In particular, Middelburg is only five miles away, although waiting for the intervening bridges to be raised can cause the trip to take hours.

De Oranjemolen (Orange Mill)

The Oranjemolen (Oranje Mill) is located at the Oranjedijk. It was constructed in 1699 and restored in 1971.

Leaving the historic part of Vlissingen now for a stroll near the water's edge.
On entering the boulevard the bastion is the first to catch the eye.
Construction took place around 1443, its purpose to protect the Port of Vlissingen. Cannons have been placed after restorations in 1989.
From here you can watch today's boats leave to pilot big ships safely towards Antwerp or the North Sea.

A Maritime Masterpiece

by 36waterfalls

.
.
.
Vlissingen dates back to the 14th century and is rich in Maritime History.
The narrow Westerschelde links the North Sea to the Port of Antwerp.
In the old days ships had to get permission from Vlissingen to sail into Antwerp, Gent or Bruges.
The channel at Vlissingen has always been a narrow passage and ships were in clear view for the cannons protecting the city, which was also a great way to force toll on ships to pass.

Vlissingen 17th century was enjoying great wealth from cargo ships together with protection from
the Dutch naval base (their Admiral Michiel de Ruyter had been born here).

Nowadays, Vlissingen's largest industries are Container Shipments, Port Industry and of course Tourism!
The city has a population of around 50.000
