oosternde to vlissingen
by sirmalco70
Could any one help, please My husband and I will be in Oostende in September, we will have no transport. Is it easy to get to the foot ferry to get to Vlissingen ? how long does it take and approx how much. We have looked into going by train, but as we only want to be there for a day it takes a long while. Thanks for hopeful reply Lorraine

Travel with the Kusttram (see http://www.delijn.be/dekusttram/) to Knokke (station). From there take the Veolia bus #14 to Breskens (Breskens, Veerhaven). From Breskens take the ferry (see: http://www.veolia-transport.nl/veolia-transport-netherland/fastferries/) to Vlissingen. From the the ferry terminal it's 15 minutes walking or you can take the local bus.
Count on 3 hours travel time each way.

If the weather is good and you're quite sporty, renting a bicycle in Oostende is an option. With the car free towpaths between Oostende, Brugge, Damme and Sluis, it's extremely safe and plesant and the ferry between Breskens and Vlissingen is ideal for cyclists.

Comfy and light travel

Comfortable shoes, there are a lot of cobbled stones, so best fior ladies to maintain a flat heel or one that is more stable. In summer sandals/ trainers would be appropriate for the walks along the beach front and in town.
Watching the sea pilots
by pieter_jan_v
Vlissingen has a separate harbour for the sea pilot boats.
The ever busy shipping to and from the Antwerp harbour requires the transfer of sea pilots at each hour of the day. This routine goea on and on all year long and is a great attraction to watch; especial the manoeuvring in the small harbour.
Bellamy Park and Fountain
by 36waterfalls
Here's a bit of green in the heart of Vlissingen's city centre. There used to be an inner harbour on this spot, which was filled up early 20th century to create a small park.
It's named after an important Dutch poet, Jacobus Bellamy (1757-1786) who was born here.
The fountain was placed in memory of the Vlissingen writers Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken.
The park is surrounded by bars and restaurants and home to many festivities.
One of the buildings houses the Reptile Zoo (www.iguana.nl), which I won't comment on, since I'm not a big fan of creepy crawlies!
Beach Houses
by 36waterfalls
Usually, houses like this are nothing more than sheds or lockers, great for storage.
Vlissingen however, has 'sleep-cabins': real beach houses for rent during Summer Season.
Check website for details.
