Living in Leiden

by evelis

Hi!

Im coming to Leiden this September to study at Leiden University. Did you find hard to find an accomondation and part time job? Im from Czech Rep. - EU member state, but I have no idea how it works with working visas etc.

Any help or advice would be great.
Thank you!

Well the idea with the EU = EC is that you do not need a visa to work in a other member state.

Welcome to VT ;-)

Travel Tips for Leiden

Molen - Windmills

by penumbra

There are nine windmills in Leiden. The most famous is De Valk a couple of blocks south east of the central train station. The two pictured here are a couple of blocks north west of the central train station. In the foreground in Maredijmolen dating from 1735. In the background is D’Heesterboom dating from 1804.

Hofjes

by Xefian

Maybe this should be listed in off the beaten path...because we may not have discovered ,or learned the true nature of a Hofje without Mique pointing them out ...They're referred to as Almshouses in English...quiet little courtyards once inhabited by Nuns who cared for the poor and sick...If you know to look for the signs and doors ajar, you can visit these Hofje (found throughout the Netherlands)...From the outside they appear as a regular street ...but once inside ,well you see the picture...One is expected to be respectful of the residents space, but the serenity of the Hofjes generally invites such behavior.

Keys and Leiden

by tompt

Everywhere in the city you will encounter keys. A nickname for Leiden is Sleutelstad (keycity).
Since 1293 the cityseal had St Peter on it. St Peter often has a key in his hand. This comes from the biblical text (Matthew 16: 19) in which Jesus gives Peter the keys to the heavens.
St Peter was patron saint of the city. And the main church was dedicated to him.

The official seal of Leiden now bears two keys.

Just take a stroll

by TheDunno

Just make a relaxed walk around this city.
There are windmills, there's water, old buildings and colourful people. Plenty to keep you and your photocamera happy.

And oh yeah.....there are some pretty amazing musea too! When i took this picture i just came back from "het Leids rijksmuseum der oudheden". They had a special exhibition about Syria there. Amazing!
