Hotel The Rose: The Rose - no sweet smells here...
If there's one place you should avoid when staying in Leiden, it's this hotel. Overpriced, dirty, lousy breakfast, noisy cafe downstairs, lots of noise outside on the weekends... the only thing that it's got going for it is that it's very near to the central trainstation. But well - Leiden isn't that big so nothing is very far away from the trainstation. There are quite a few alteratives to The Rose...
My mother and uncle stayed here while visiting me. They booked a twin room. After the managed to get inside (nobody answered the door, it took them half an hour to find someone with a key!), they were given a single, and the owner put a mattress on the floor for my uncle to sleep on. The didn't get much sleep as it was friday night and all the local kids were partying in the square outside. The next morning a woman hastily scurried of to the local supermarket when it turned out these strange people actually were planning on having breakfast. She returned with a loaf of bread, a jar of peanutbutter and some slices of cheese.
The cost of this wonderful experience: €75.
If you're looking for cheap accommodation in Leiden, check out the B&Bs.
They're much better value for money.
If you have a car, there are several good-value hotels on the outskirts of Leiden.
--- Update (oct 2005) ---
This hotel has now changed it's name to Hotel Da Vinci (http://www.hotel-davinci.nl/). It does look a bit better now than it used to (this is judging by the outside!), but I still wouldn't book/pay without seeing the room first!

In the city centre there are a few nice hotels. You can book them at the VVV tourist office.
On the picture you can see a part of the monumental Gemeenlandshuis.

A friends flat: A wonderful opportunity
I was lucky enough to work with and be friends with someone who maintained his flat in Leiden while we were working in Karlsruhe. He invited me up for a couple days while he was home visiting family.
Thank you so much for this great chance to see your town.

Room in a historical city of Leiden: Cheap room in Leiden for short stay
I strongly recommend this accommodation for tourists because it is very cheap, and the best thing is that you can use the kitchen and the fridge during your stay. It is located in a historical city (Rapenburg) of Leiden. All main super markets are at a walking distance.
The best thing about this room is that the person staying there can use the kitchen, so do not have to buy expensive food. Also, the room is just 5 minutes from the Leiden train station. Many museums and lot of restaurants are nearby. You can find food of almost every country.

The Flying Pig Beach Hostel: A great place to stay
The Flying Pig is not actually situated in Leiden itself, but in Noordwijk an Zee which is located near the beach (hence the name ;o) ). It is, however, the hostel closest to Leiden and easy to reach by bus. It belongs to the flying Pig chain which has two more hostels located in Amsterdam...
The beach hostel is a surfer's place, only 500 meter to the beach, which was amazing, even in a cold and rainy spring...
I stayed there in march which means that all the surfers were not there at the time, so it was not really busy. I was assured though, that it will be in summer. The hostel is run by mostly English/American/Australian travellers so you won't need any dutch...
All in all a really friendly and comfortable stay in a nice hostel...
There are different sizes of rooms to choose from. We stayed in a 18 (or was it 16?) bed dorm which was nearly empty, so that was no problem... The prices depend on where you stay, the bigger the cheaper...
There is a cosy living room/bar area which is the heart of the hostel. It has a sitting corner a kitchen, free internet access and some large wooden tables to sit.
All in all very cosy and comfrotable...
