Church

by lamarwess

Can anyone tell me if there is a catholic church in Oostvoorne or Brielle?
Thank you. Marty

Re: Church

by mccalpin

I assume that you are looking for the mainstream Roman Catholic Church, not the Old Catholic Church, the Anglican Catholic Church, etc, right?

The website www.masstimes.org (for looking up Roman Catholic churches and Mass times worldwide) reports
"Holy Martyrs van Gorcum of Brielle 0181412142 Updated: 4/27/2008
Address: Nobelstraat 22 Brielle BC 3231 NL"
It says that this church is three miles from Oostvoorne, in Brielle.

The church's website is http://www.rkparochiebrielle.nl/ and this site reports that (if my Dutch is correct) that Saturday evening Mass is at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday Mass is at 9:30 a.m. (click on "Kerkdiensten en tijden" on the left, which says something about "Church services" (Kerkdiensten).

Note that when you visit the masstimes.org website (or go direct to
http://www.masstimes.org/dotNet/showchurches.aspx?type=INTLCITY&q=&country=NL&countrycode=NL&city=oostvoorne&friendlyChurchName=&churchName=&statecode=11
if this link works for you), that there are several dozen Roman Catholic churches within a 15 miles radius.

Of course, you'll verify this when you get there, but with so many churches, it looks like you won't have a problem.

Where's ATLC when you need her.

Ther's a RK Church just 10 blocks from where she lives: Parochiekerk, Nobelstraat 24

Thanks for the info Bill.

Re: Church

A 15 mile radius, Bill, would include major city Rotterdam with the satellite cities Schiedam, Vlaardingen. That's why so many results turn up.
However, it would take quite a long trip by public transportation, or around 30 minutes by car (motorway) to get to those churches.

Brielle is nearest. Or you might prefer Hellevoetsluis (12 kms from Oostvoorne).

Re: Church

by mccalpin

Anke-Thea, I said a 15 mile radius because the website listed all the churches within 15 miles...it wasn't a number I chose...still, clearly the website correctly identified the nearest church as the one in Brielle, so all is well...but the OP does have other choices, depending on the church's schedule or his schedule or whatever. That's nice, don't you think?

hi Bill, it wasn't my intention to correct your information. I was giving additional info from a local's view. We are technically on a small island here, the 15 mile radius are not road miles but aerial miles and mean crossing over (a major river) to a completely different area. Also, the link gives options that are actually much further than even the 15 mile (aerial) radius.

The excellent website that you mention gives a list of churches mostly in small places that are almost all virtually non-reachable within a reasonable time on a Sunday morning if dependent on public transportation. To get there by car or bus it involves either a considerable detour or a ferry crossing.
You are correct that Brielle is the nearest and really just about the only option. Hellevoetsluis would be a good alternative, since it's on the same island.

Oh PJ, 10 blocks is a little overdone! That would cover just about all of Brielle, but the catholic parish church is in my street :-) hehehe.

Ooops, that should have been 10 houses, haha.

Travel Tips for Oostvoorne

Oostvoorne

by Patje

The unique variety in nature and landscape, the peace and quiet make Oostvoorne, which is located right next to mainport Rotterdam, a very special recreational district.

Enjoy the beaches and the unique nature in the woods and dunes of 'Voornes Duin'.

"Abundance of natural beauty"

Challenges of the coast: from bathing beach to deep-sea diving
The lenght of the beach garantees pleasure for sportsmen and women whilst offering enough room for sun-seekers. The presence of sandbanks makes the beach ideal for children as there is no danger of strong currents.
During the past six years the north bank of the Oostvoornse Meer, which forms the border between the island Voorne and the Maasvlakte, has become a top location for deep-sea divers. The south-west bank has been special arranged for children and is provided with playground equipment.

Culture
In the thirteenth century, the first dunes emerged here, after which the creek estuaries developed into magnificent dune lakes, amidst a natural profusion of flora and fauna. Voorne's 'Burcht van Heren' also dates back to this time. Westvoorne is also a cultural attraction nowadays; no less than three private museums exhibit their unique collections.

Nature
It is always a pleasure to cycle, walk, horse-ride and simply enjoy oneself in the woods and dunes of Voorne. 'Voornes Duin' is one of the most important nature reserves in Western Europe. Over 60% of all Dutch species of birds breed in this rich and varied area. The spoonbills on the 'Quakjeswater' and the cormorant colony on the 'Breede Water' are favourite objects for observation. Tall mullein, loosestrife, willowherb and evening primrose, as well as many other species, provide the natural and unique flora of Voornes Duin.
Sometimes you will be lucky enough to suddenly find yourself eye to eye with one of the many animals which wander freely in this area: an Iceland pony or one of the many impressive dark brown to black Galloway oxen and cows that graze on the dunes.

Coast & watersports
On the Rockanje bathing beach, the stretch between the 1st and 2nd markers is ideal for a day along the coast. This beach is also ideal for families with children. The so-called Maasvlakte beach with more than 1600 parking places, located on the southern side of the Maasvlakte, is worth a special mention.
It is the ideal spot for surfers. And the high chain of dunes offers hang gliders and ultralight planes the perfect place to launch themselves into the blue. This is an excellent location for sports like parasailing, ultralight flying, scuba diving and sea kayaking.
Voorne is surrounded by water and offers all manners of water sports. There is a wide choice of windsurfing and diving, both on inland waters like the Brielse Maas and the Oostvoornse Meer as well on the Haringvliet and the open sea.

A seaside village

by ATLC

Oostvoorne is a lovely seaside village, just 5 kilometres from Brielle. That makes a nice cycling trip.
Oostvoorne played its part in Dutch history. Every year there is the Jacoba van Beieren day. A lady who lived in the 14th century and was married to the French crown prince and later even to the English heir to the throne. She lived in the house on this postcard. It is now inhabited by my friends so I have had the pleasure more than once to enjoy this beautiful old house.

Places to visit in the neighbourhood:
Rockanje
Hellevoetsluis
Zwartewaal
Heenvliet
Geervliet
Spijkenisse
Brielle

I have built pages about them too. Please visit them!

"Postcard"

Oostvoorne is a village on the coast. Actually an old seaside resort with lots of lovely old houses. Nature reserve park along the coast. In summer I often cycle from Brielle to Oostvoorne. Only a few kilometres and you're in a completely different atmosphere!
Picture is a postcard as you can see.

The nature reserve park boasts unusual flora and fauna. It counts in Europe as one of the most special places for bird watching.

"Council house"

Now a library and tourist information office. Behind the building are the remains of an old fort.

"The village church"

"Church tower"

A nice old village square with shops is behind the church.

"Nature reserve"

Entrance to nature reserve belonging to Zuidhollandse Landschap

"Medieval residence"

Old house where at one time (14th century) Jacoba van Beieren (of Bayern) took residence. A private family lives there now.

"Houses"

Oostvoorne is and was a prosperous village and beach resort. Some nice houses in the village.

Biesbosch

by Patje

The Biesbosch National Park is unique. It is a freshwater tidal area with meandering creeks, swampy willow forests and an exceptional range of flora and fauna. There is plenty to see, enjoy and do in this unique area. You can take a walk, go boating or canoeing, relax during excursions, observe unusual birds or visit the museum or one of the information centres. Enough reasons to inform you about the tremendous possibilities the Biesbosch has to offer.
