Scheveningen

by Pranzolo

Hello everyone, I'll be going to work in The Hague, where I've taken a room for rent in Scheveningen. It's quite close to my office, but I'm worried it's a bit too far from the city center, and I have had bad experiences living in the suburbs in nordic cities (boooooring).
Is it a lively place? Is there people having a walk on the street in Scheveningen, or is it a ghost city? What about the nightlife there? And what about shops, groceries, stores, and trasportation to downtown?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Scheveningen is popular in the summer due to the Northsea beach, especial in the sunny weekends.

In the winter time the Pier and the beach still attracks people. Also the Scheveningen circius theater usual is home to popular musicals.

The harbour area is being transformed into an even more attractive place (but that will take another decade). It's an area with good fish restaurants.

There are 2 tramlines with easy access to adjacent Den Haag (The Hague).
I would not worry about nightlife, shopping etc, because the tramride is an easy one.

I recommend you visit: http://www.denhaag.nl/en.htm

Just a note on the Albert Heijn Supermarket mentioned above: They are one of the more expensive supermarkets in the Netherlands. I don't know what the alternatives are in Den Haag/Scheveningen, but it may be worth to look around...

Hi there,

I lived in Amsterdam for a number of years in the 70's and always visited Scheveningen whenever I could. The beach is lovely especially in the summer, it does get a bit crowded though as I have been back to the Netherlands recently. Even though it gets busy on the beach it's still a great atmosphere with everyone chilling out. Plenty of places to eat and walk about in a relaxed mood. I would highly recommend it. - Sue

Travel Tips for The Hague

Maurits House

by jeoren

The Maurits House dates from the 17th century. Its a classic building in the oldest part of the city. The house is named after Johan Maurits van Nassau Siegen, who wanted it to be built. Next to the house you see the so called 'Little tower'; this is the place where the prime-minister takes his seat.

Visit the Omniversum. Itis a kind of cinema, but the screen is vast and extends from one side of the theatre to the other and up over your head. The films are varied and are usually of the documentary kind. The sound system is awesome and you feel as though you are in the places depicted. Nice cafeteria there too. I enjoyed cycling through the Hague because the facilities for cyclists are excellent in Holland, I was able to tak eme grandson cycling there when he was only 6 years of age.

Since 1995, The Hague has a new townhall, public library and municipal archives right in the centre of the city between department stores, offices and theatres. The large, white building was disigned by the American architect, Richard Meier. About 2,300 civil servants work here, and it is also a meeting place for the people of The Hague.

FONDEST memory: going to SCHEVENINGEN to enjoy the beach, lying in the soft white sand, shopping at the boulevard boutiques, and afterwards having drinks somewhere on the boulevard, with a nice view of the sea, our North sea and.........walk the pier...... Having a day off on 'PRINSJESDAG' to go see the queen passing by in the GOUDEN KOETS (GOLDEN COACH)on her way to the Binnenhof, the opening of the Parliamentary Year, always on the 3rd Tuesday of September.

Haring buffet

by SnoopySue

To eat fresh haring (raw fish) is something you must try when in Den Haag. It could be pretty heavy for your stomach if you don't have previous expirience with this sort of food so I would reccomend to take a big piece of bread and lot of onion. Buy it from street sellers and join the locals eating their favorite snack.
