Where are the sports facillites?
by Cartmanscarto
Hi, I'm spending some time in Vlaardingen Oost and I'd like to know if there is a sports centre close by or where the nearest gym, tennis courts and swimming pool is. I've seen lots of football fields, but none of the above.
Any info would be great!
Regards,
Cartman

I hope you enjoy your stay in Vlaardingen. You're in a good location to explore Schiedam and Rotterdam. If you ever decide to venture out towards rural Oostvoorne, Rockanje, Brielle, drop me a line.
It's a completely different region and easy to reach by train to Maassluis, then a 5-minute ferry to Rozenburg, then about 20-30 mins by bus.

Statues are everywhere
by mafootje
This statue is located in front of the "groen van Prinsteren Lyceum". The school is located at the Rotterdamseweg in Vlaardingen. I was born at the Rotterdamseweg, we lived in houses that where build as emergency houses after the war...the stayed much longer as planned. Now they are replaced by modern houses..

Getting and taking "Halen & Brengen"
by mafootje
This is a new event near the harbour of Vlaardingen, it was supposed to be the follow up to the "Herring & Beerfest" (Haring en Bierfeest).
The Herring & Beerfest was a yearly event which has been here since i can remember. It actually started in 1973 when Vlaardingen celebrated it 700 year anniversary.
But this year it was replaced and combined with the provincial waterdays.. But for me and the people i have spoken too it was a real disappointment. The events that where organised where ok but it was much smaller as the Herring & Bierfest was. The only place you noticed the event was on one bank of the Harbour, you could walk in the city center and never know there was something special going on...
Sorry i want the Herring & Bierfest back....

Run, Swim, Surf, Hike or take a Bike
by mafootje
Next to the Highway
The Krabbeplas is located right next to the highway between Vlaardingen and Maassluis. There are many recreational possibilities in this area some depending on the season.
It's possible to swim , surf, take a walk through the area or bike around.
Facilities and Posibilities
It has an restaurant and some public restrooms.
If you like to take a walk it's has many possibilities, you can take a short walk around the water which will take about 30 or 45 minutes, but you can also stretch it out by going into the further in the park.
When your going to bike here it's better to see it as a part of a longer trip from here you can go into the "Broekpolder' or go through Maassluis and back through the Shore Woods "Lickebaert" which is located next to the "Nieuwe Waterweg".
More
You can find more about this shorewood in my tips on this seperate destination, just click on locations near Vlaardingen or go to all my travelpages and look it up.

Take a Fencing Clinic from "Trefpunt"
by mafootje
The origin of fencing was the practice of swordmanship to prepare for the fighting of duels. Images of fencing are found as early as 1190 displayed on a temple in Egypt. There are many forms of fencing and it divers from country to country.
In the middle ages the use of swords was more or less useless because of the armour men used then. The use of a heavy broadsword was the one thing that still was used against the body armour. Power was more important as skill then.
When the firearms where invented the swordplay regained his prominence in the 15th century. The swords where still quite heavy.
Nowadays fencing swords a very light, and are used in the sport of fencing.
At Fencing Club "the Trefpunt" you can learn the skills. They also give fencing clinics to small groups, it might be a nice idea for the next company outing. We did it with our company and we had a lot of fun that night. When you take a fencing clinic all material is provided, swords, protective mask and vest but also a glove.. The only thing you need to take are some sporting shoes and easy sporting clothing...
