The perfect ski resort
by daarth
Situated half way between Oslo and Bergen, Geilo is one of the most popular Ski resorts in Norway. It doesn't have the bigest and longest ski slopes, but you can find any type of ski activity imaginable. Alpine, Telemark, Snowboard, kite-skiing and of course cross-country. It is perfect as a family resort and the nightlife is great!
Popular and crowded.....
by daarth
At the top seasons the place can be fairly crowded and reservations must be done well in advance. Needless to say this is also the most expensive time to stay here and you will be walking in queue for everything. This picture of the centre is taken Christmas morning and is unique because you see no people. Probably the only time of the year it is this quite.
In the high season, it pays to leave your car at the hotel and just walk around the village.
Dr. Holm
by daarth
Dr. Holm built this hotel the same year the railway opened in 1909. It has changed owners many times since then, but has kept it's name. The hotel has done many renovations up through the years but has managed to keep it's unique atmosphere.
Even if you don't live here I can recommend trying the bar for "after skiing" or the nightclub for some nightlife action.
Superstition To Silver
by RoyJava
Norwegian legends report on people finding a silver mine, however when trying to return to it they were unable to find it again. The mysterious Wood Nymphs protected the silver and did magic things with it. It is kept in the myths about the Wood Nymphs of which Lady Huldre was a member.
It belongs to Norwegian superstition, compared to the Moon and female properties. Silver was used as protection against trolls, goblins, dwarfs and when given by a Wood Nymph you had been embraced by one of them. Later silver was used against illnesses, or for healing processes and to preserve a good health.
LADY HURDLE
Geilo

"Quiet skiing resort"
We visited Geilo if February mostly for the skiing as the Alps seemed to be suffering from a lack of snow. It is situated half way betweeen Oslo and Bergen. We flew to Oslo and it took 4 hours transfer time to Geilo. The town itself is relatively small with reasonable shops but not a lot to do apres skiing. The booze in Norway is very expensive so stock up on duty free before going. The big plus was very quiet slopes and good snow although if you are a very keen skiier the ski area is not large.
