Hi will be in Alta from May 14 to May 16 2007, looking for a cheapplace to stay ...

Whats the best way to go to Karasjok from Alta?

Don't know about accommodation, but I'm pretty sure the best way from Alta to Karasjok would be by bus! It takes around 4h30mins, I think.
You are aware that May 17th is the Norwegian national day....?:o) Shops etc will be closed, transportation fairly limited - and there will be cheerful Norwegians everywhere, wearing national costumes and waving Norwegian flags...;o) Don't know what else is going on in Karasjok on the 17th, but I'm sure there will be parades - like in any Norwegian town.
Finnmark has been inhabited by people for thousand years.
The first petroglyph at this site was not discovered until 1972 because they were overgrown by moss and lichens.
Since then over 5000 petroglyphs have been discovered in this area and the plants obscuring them have been carefully removed.
The site was placed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites on 3 December 1985. It is Norway's only prehistoric World Heritage Site.
