Hamar i a small town in the eastern district of Norway in the county of Hedmark some 130 km north of Oslo. It has a poplation of aprox 28 000 people. The city as it is today is about 165 years old, but the roots of Hamar dates back to mediaeval times when a great cathedral was the centre of the community surrounded by monasteries and other facilities belonging to catholic practices of that time. The ruins of the great cathedral can be seen today at the scenic Domkirkeodden- an outdoor museum close to the lake Mjøsa. Absolutely worth a visit! Historians also belive that the origins of Hamar runs back to the Viking era when vikings sailed their ships proudly on the lake :) Not far from the museum of Domkirkeodden is the National Train Museum. Great fun for kids!
Untill I get some pictures of my own I'm borrowing these from the Hedmark Museum. For more information on sights in Hamar visit www.hamar.kommune.no
The world’s oldest paddle steamer still in regular service, called The Skibladner, is aslo a main tourist attraction in Hamar. Take a trip on this ship across the lake and visit other cities around Mjøsa. Note: Summertime only!
In the winther olympics of 1994 Hamar hosted the events of figure skating, long distance skating and short distance skating. The olympic arenas are open to public and worth a visit if you're interested in sports. One of the arenas, The Hamar Olympic Amfi, are the home arena of the local hockeyteam Storhamar Dragons. Go dragons!
Gudbrandsdalen is the main artery to the nord of the country. European road E6 is coming trough this area.
