Norway in a nutshell - just a day

by jayanthiv

Hi,

We intend to take the Norway in a Nutshell tour- 1 day round trip from Bergen - . I see from the schedule (fjordtours.com website)that the trip is pretty fixed - there is no time in between to spend time at one of the places if you want to, you have to hop on and off one mode of transport to another - is it how this it actually works? Do you simply have to enjoy while travelling?

Thank you
Jayanthi

You can buy the train tickets separately. The timings are on the website: www.nsb.no

However, book in advance and opt for 'mini-prix' fares where available.

The funky & scenic Flamsbana ride can be purchased via the website too, for Myrdal to Flam (or vice-versa). You board a ferry for a cruise on the fjord near Flam, then at the other end a coach takes you up the beautiful hills to Voss. Another ticket can cover your Voss to Bergen train ride.

The Flamsbana makes a stop near a waterfall, where if you're lucky, you'll get to see Norwegian 'fairies' dancing! Lovely sight ;-)

Norway is breathtaking. Do take the funicular ride to the top of Bergen's hill, and then walk down through the scenic woods.

Thank you for the fast reply.

I read that the Flam rail is best going downhill - Is this from Flam to Myrdal or other way round?

Thank you
Jayanthi

Definitely book the trip yourself. Provide you book in advance you'll save money and be able to pick the times that suit you although I think there is only one boat that's suitable to take from Bergen to Flam and it leaves around 8.00 am. I did the Flamsbana from Flam to Myrdal (uphill) and really enjoyed it - I don't think the direction should make a significant difference to your enjoyment of the trip :)

Travel Tips for Bergen

Clouds

by Sileas

Regarding the weather Bergen has its reputation. However, much rain means also that there are always many very interesting clouds in the sky, so take a look up there, while you're here. If you are lucky you might also catch a glimpse of the Northern Light, although it is far more interesting further up north. This is opnly possible when its cold though...
And there is just nothing more exciting than a clear blue sky after two weeks of constant cloud and almost constant rain!

... walk around the Old Town,...

by Toby_Swiss

... walk around the Old Town, Bryggen, once the working centre of the Hanseatic merchants. It's a experience itself to walk around in its old, steep alleys with its colorful houses. And even if it's raining, the whole town creates such an impressive atmosphere that you smile as if the sun were shining... :)

Look at the pavements

by diocletianvs

Bergen invests a lot in design of its streets and squares. This is a detail from the recently renovated Strandgaten. Between the regular stone paving there are these uniquely designed ceramic tiles done by one Danish artist.
Since this is one of the major shopping streets the pavements have built-in heating systems that prevents icing during the winter.

This country is just crammed...

by Hi_Im_Phil

This country is just crammed full of tunnels. I guess when you've mountains, fjords, and rivers as the majority of your terrain you have to make do. On our trip from Bergen to Oslo, we drove through probably 15 tunnels, but the most impressive was the world's longest tunnel measuring just short of 25 kms, or around 15 miles! It's so long that they put different colored lights inside to prevent the onset of vertigo in the drivers.

take the Flåm railway up to...

by mettemaritc

take the Flåm railway up to Myrdal.

This trip with the fantastic train up to Myrdal, which lays 850 m abow sealevel, starts in Flåm on sealevel and it is only 20 km long, but it took 20 years to bild it.
It is a must to take this trip when you are here .It is just breathtaking view.
