Bergen Itinerary

by hsiang

Hi all, really need help as facing difficulty in planning our 4.5days trip in Bergen in early May next year. What we have in mind:
day 1 : arrival about noon, will walk around Bergen
day 2 : Norway in a nutshell : Bergen-Gudvangen- stay overnite in Gudvangen
day 3 : Gudvangen-Flam - stay overnite in Flam (is it recommended to spend 2 nites in Gudvangen & Flam? Or is the scenery pretty much the same?)
day 4 : Flam-back to Bergen
day 5 : would like to do Blue Ice Trip on Folgefonna glacier. We don't hv driving experience in Europe, hence will be taking public transport. but can only find info that we should take bus from Bergen to Norheimsund followed by ferry to Herand. What would be approx. cost for round trip from Bergen? Timetable?
Is it possible to do a day trip from Bergen? If not, please help to recommend ~Thank you very much~

Hi.

May is the best time to visit West-Norway. There are less tourists and still some snow in the mountains around the fjords, which makes it extra picturesque. About your driving experience... It's less traffic in Norway and the roads are narrow compared to other European countries. It will be fine to drive according to your routeplan. Renting a car instead of a bus gives you more freedom and the possibilty to stop where you want. But be careful to drive inside Bergen city. It's a mess and it's hard to find the way. Bergen is a nice city to walk and you can see most of the famous part in half a day, like the fish square, Bryggen and take the "Fløybanen-tram" up to the mountain veiwpoint.

A short look at the road map and some internet searches gives you a typical tourist route: From Bergen drive directly to Folgefonna glacier on this route: Bergen-Arna-turn right at Norheimsund-drive road nr.49 to Tørvikbygd ferryport-ferry crossing to Jondal-then follow the small road trough Krossdalen to the Folgefonna Glacier. Then start the next part of your trip: Take the long tunnel under the Glacier to the town Odda-Eidfjord-Geilo-Hol-Flåm/Aurland - From here you can decide if you have time enough to drive the old narrow mountain road over Aurlandsfjellet to Lærdal and then drive back to Flom/Aurland on one of the longest tunnels in the world) Flåm/Aurland-Gudvangen-Voss-Bergen.

For some years ago I drove from Lærdal to Bergen on the mountain road over Aurlandsfjellet and down to Flåm/Aurland. It is one of the most spectacular roads in Norway, but make sure the weather is good before you drive there.

Don't stay two days in Gudvangen and Flåm. The scenery is the same.
And I doubt there are buses from Bergen to the glacier and back again on the same day.

Thank you for your advise...but we can only take public transport~

In Flåm itself it is nothing to do. If you want to spend a day you should take bus into Aurland Valley to Osterbo and hike back.

Travel Tips for Bergen

the town of the 7 mountains

by call_me_rhia

Bergen is a rainy town in southern Norway, spectacularly set on a peninsula amid 7 snow-capped mountains. The long row of austere timber buildings and cobblestone streets that line the waterfront and the fish-market bear witness to an important past; it was, in fact, one of the largest ports of the Hanseatic League of Merchants. I enjoyed strolling about town, visiting the many museums (although I am not a museum fan), and especially the seafood market by the harbour... mount floyen proved to be an interesting side-trip, too.

Above all, Bergen was my entry point and my first taste of Norway - a great place to start discovering an interesting country.

Wander around Bryggen and the outdoor fish market. The view from Mt Flǿyen - reached by funicular which was covered by the Bergen card. Is it still? Go up anyway, especially if you are not going on to the Fjords.

Buildings Architecture

I found the old building beautiful and interesting. They are all around, in the city centre, in the Brygeen and even when getting further up the hill to the Floyen direction. So I added here few examples.

PT 2 Flǻm
Stay a night. During the day Flǻm is just a place on the nutshell tour where people transfer from train to boat or vice versa. In the evening it is a real place. Views from the railway which plunges from the snow to the sea.

Want to swim ?

by Vikingwoman

If the wether is bad, and you dont know what to do....What about going for a swim ?
At the Sentralbadet you can have fun, and children love it. You find it at Teatergaten 37.
Close to the cinemas....
