Visiting Bergen and BØNES
by dominick25
Hello. I the next few months I'm going to visit Bergen. I've heard it is one of the most beautiful cities in Norway. I will be going from Berlin/Germany. Could anyone suggest me the fastest/ the cheapest way to get there ( plain, train, bus ?).
I also hope to visit my old friends who are living in BØNES. How far is it from Bergen or is it in fact the part of the city? How can I get there from the Bergen centrum ( bus, taxi) - how much will it cost? Or could anyone please suggest me any not expensive hotel in the vicinity of BØNES?

According to the map Bönes is a suburb located halfway from the airport to the city.

Flying is the fastest way, and probably also cheaper. Try KLM (via Amsterdam), SAS (via Copenhagen or Oslo), Norwegian (via Oslo) or Germanwings to Oslo(and independent Train, Bus or Flight from there).

Bønes is indeed about halfway between the centre and the airport (south). It takes about 10 min. to drive from the centre and there are buses. I guess a taxi would be about NOK 150,- (20 Euro). Nearest hotels are toward the airport (not far), but you might find cheaper pensions in town.
PS: Have a look at the nice tips on Bergen here on VT ;-)
Have a nice trip

Thank you very much for all your answers.
That's a pity that there are no pictures of BØNES on Virtual Tourist :(
Would anyone be so helpful and could recommend me a cheap hotel in Bergen?

On this picture from Grieg's home, you can see Bønes: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/11e1c/#TL
Bønes is on the hillside, and has the same view towards the lake "Nordåsvannet".
An average midrange hotel in the centre: Thon Hotel Bergen Brygge
Or a cheap guesthouse: Marken Gjestehus
The hotels near the airport are somewhat more expencive: Thon Hotel Bergen Airport
Travel Tips for Bergen
Tourist office
by diocletianvs
Opposite the Fish Market, on Vågsallmenning Square you'll find the Bergen Tourist Office (if you position yourself facing the statue of Ludvig Holberg like on this photo, the Office would be right behind your back).
It is one of the biggest tourist offices I've ever seen, offering numerous free brochures, information on Bergen and the fjords, accommodation centre, exchange office etc. Here you can also buy Bergen Card or book your tour on the fjords. The tourist office is situated on the ground floor of a former Bergen Exchange. The big hall is known as the “Fresco Hall”. The murals were painted by Axel Revold in 1921-23, and contain three series: The North Country Wall, The Bergen Wall and The World Wall. Make sure to check them among all the brochures and info aou’ll find there.
The Fresco Hall is also a good place if you need to hide from the sudden rain shower :)
Opening hours 2003;
June, July and August: daily 8.30 am-10 pm.
May and September: daily 9 am-8 pm.
Rest of the year: Mon-Sat 9 am-4 pm.

Central Square
by Gili_S
This is the central square and pedestrian street in the city centre. It seems that everything starts from here with crowded people, shopping, eating or just hanging around. Not sure how lovely it will be on a rainy day.
The proximity of many fjords...
by zeelie
The proximity of many fjords makes Bergen a city not to be missed when visiting Norway. In the summer, lots of people will be seating at the harbourfront, enjoying the music from the street musicians and eating fresh seafood. It was a truly wonderful atmosphere.
Hanseatic League
by GUYON
Visit the area of Hanseatic League. The Germans had settled here at the 14° Century a trading post to buy fish.
They stopped in 1743.
The wooden coonstructions were arsoned several times but rebuilt on the same basis each time.
Dramatic Scenery
by cheekymarieh
As you arrive in the city by ferry you are met with some of the most fantastic scenery. The ferry weaves its way up the coastline through small thoroughfares and under several bridges. You are left wondering just how did you manage to fit under the bridges.
