Walaker Hotel is situated in the tiny little (but oh so picturesque!) village of Solvorn, near the small town Sogndal in the county of Sogn og Fjordane. (For a little more info on Solvorn, see my Sogn og Fjordane page.) Beautiful Urnes stave church (which is on UNESCO's world heritage list, read more about it on my Sogn og Fjordane page) is just a short ferry ride away. The hotel is situated right beside the fjord and a small sandy beach. It has 24 guest rooms in three buildings, all decorated in different styles. The main building is from 1934, and is surrounded by lovely gardens with fruit trees, lilacs and roses. The hotel has been run by the Nitter family ever since 1690, and today's hosts are the 8th and 9th generation. Walaker Hotel is a member of an organization called "Historic Hotels", comprising many of Norway's most charming hotels. An art gallery, Galleri Walaker 300, was opened at the hotel's 300-year anniversary in 1990. The gallery is located in an old barn, which was built in 1883 using timber from Solvorn's old 17th-century church. (!!) The hotel restaurant focuses on traditional Norwegian dishes made with local ingredients - and it is supposed to be *very* good (I haven't eaten here). The hotel is open from May 1st to September 30th. See their web site for more info re prices etc.

From the hotel's website by travelfrosch This hotel (which was called Rainbow Hotel Astoria when we visited) was just fine. Clean, comfortable, no-frills rooms for a reasonable price. Good Scandinavian-style buffet breakfast served in a large breakfast room. When we visited, it was a member of the SkanPlus consortium, which allowed us to stay for the special summer rate of NOK 590 per night. NOTE: As of January 2007, the SkanPlus program has been discontinued. Despite the end of the SkanPlus discounts, it appears the rates at this hotel are still somewhat reasonable. Double rooms during the week can be as low as NOK 795 per night, including breakfast. Not great, but not bad for downtown Oslo.

For our journey in the fjord we have chosen the Strynvatn Camping. Located in a wonderful place, on the shore of Stryn fjord, between the mountains, Strynvatn Camping is offering perfect conditions for an enjoyable stay. Beside the typical Norwegian cabins, some of them covered with grass, with all the necessary utilities (fully equipped kitchen, warm and comfortable rooms and in some of the cabins also sauna or fireplaces), the camping has a barbecue pavilion by the lake shore, for 10-20 persons offering a magnificent view of the fjord. The camping is a family business and I cannot miss mentioning how kind and courteous were the owners which offered us all we need for a perfect stay. For more information and picture visit my Stryn page.

I wasn't going to include chain hotels in my tips on this page, but Quality Hotel & Resort Vøringsfoss was such a great hotel and I think it deserves to be mentioned. :o) The hotel is situated in the tiny village of Eidfjord, by the Hardangerfjord in Hordaland county, western Norway - about 2,5 hours by car from Bergen (via Voss). Eidfjord is on one of the main roads (rv7) between Oslo and Bergen. I stayed at Quality Hotel & Resort Vøringsfoss in August 2007 - and I must say I absolutely loved this hotel. The hotel is beautifully situated right by the Hardangerfjord (even though the hotel's name - Vøringsfoss - sort of implies that the hotel is situated by the Vøringsfoss waterfalls - you'll have to drive 20 km or so up through the Måbø valley to get to the waterfalls). We had booked a standard double room - but the room we got was huge, quite a bit bigger than the other standard rooms so we must have got an upgrade. Our *very* spacious room had two wonderfully comfy beds, a work desk - and a seating area (sofa, two chairs and table) by the big windows, with lovely views of the fjord. Our room (#421) was on the top floor, and the view was excellent - ask for a room on the upper floors if you want a great view. WiFi is available throughout the hotel, free of charge, and the connection was fast and reliable - pick up an access code from the reception. The entire hotel is non-smoking. The buffet breakfast was very good - as in most Scandinavian hotels in this price range. A decent selection of breads, crispbreads and crackers, cereals, yogurt, fruits, cheese, cold meat, eggs - and of course an opportunity to try some Norwegian specialties such as kaviar and brunost - brown cheese. (You'll find more about those in my restaurant tips) Quality Hotel & Resort Vøringsfoss is somewhat pricey - expect to pay ca 1500 NOK for a double room in the main tourist season (from 800 low season) - but it's worth it. The location is beautiful, the staff very friendly and helpful, and our room was simply perfect. Quite impossible to miss, really - Eidfjord is a small place... ;o)Website: http://www.choicehotels.no/hotels/hotel?hotel=NO087

The hotel was opened, under the name of "Loen's Hotel", by Anders Markusson in 1884. The hotel changed its name to Hotel Alexandra probably in 1892. It is said that the name was given by the English tourists after princess Alexandra of Denmark, married to prince Edward, who later became king Edward VII of England. The hotel, considered one of the leading hotels in Norway and still managed by Loen family, has a high degree of comfort, service and a personal atmosphere.

It is probably one of the best hotel I've been in Norway. It was built in 1894 and its architecture remember a StaveKirke. During the Second War World it was deserted. At the end of the 1980s the hotel was revived, totally renovated and run by new owners with visions of grandeur. The hotel has got 38 rooms. All rooms have a bath and WC. All the rooms are individually furnished, each in its own particular style of days gone by. The hotel has got a fantastic restaurant with menu A-La-Carte where you can taste great fish and meat. Dalen hotel give you an unique experience.

Radisson SAS Airport Hotel, Oslo by travelfrosch Sometimes, it's worth it to spend money to save time. Our flight from Kirkenes arrived late in the evening, and our continuing flight home departed the next morning. Rather than waste time (and sleep) traveling to and from the airport, we decided to stay at the airport hotel. The Radisson SAS Airport Hotel Oslo couldn't be more conveniently located, just across the street from the terminal. While you'd think a stay at an airport hotel would be quite expensive, we managed a significant discount by booking online and paying for the room in advance (this dropped our price to about NOK 1,100 for a double room, admittedly still not a bargain, but quite a savings from the rack rate of NOK 2,295). The various floors of the hotel each have a kitschy theme; we were on the "Japan" floor. The room itself was what you'd expect in a business-class hotel, with a large bed, full bathroom, trouser press, hair dryer, and mini-bar. We were happiest with the bed, which we used immediately for a fine night's sleep before our departure home.

A very nice way to work your way along the Norwegian coast is to take the Hurtigruten coastal steamer, which depart daily between Bergen and Kirkenes. Ships have cabins of varying size, luxury, and/or views. My recommendation would be to try and get an "I2" cabin, a stateroom for 2 with private shower and WC, but no view. Don't worry -- you'll get all the views you want on deck; you'll only come to your cabin to sleep. This inexpensive cabin is NOK 400 per person (double occupancy) during peak season, NOK 200 per person off season. Take a look at my transportation tip for additional details. You can also take a look at their website.
Sleep while you travel!
