Nice business trip to an intact nature
We were invited by our hosting company to spend three days in Geiranger for the conference and to enjoy the surroundings. This is what we did. We had excellent weather, sunny all the time, since we were so far up north, the day lasted for almost 20 hours so we had plenty of time for hiking in the vicinity of the hotel. There were about 100 of us, almost all the time together (good for us, not so good for the staff).
The hotel is well kept, it is supposed to be very old, beginning of the last century, but only one room is kept from the original building. The staff was very helpful and nice. Unfortunately, because of the expansion (they are adding wellness centre) the pool was closed. I did not notice any dirt as a consequence, though. It is situated very near the port, but it is a steep climb, so those not wanting to spend some time and energy, should take a taxi. Make sure you save some time to visit the museum in the basement (if you are into old cars).
The buffet was rich with sea food (very high quality) including the expensive varieties. They missed good soups and desserts, but I guess that Norway is not a place to enjoy sweets anyway. The waitresses were fast to serve, although they looked overwhelmed by the amount of people from time to time.
There are many opportunities for hiking, you can walk all you like, even enjoy skiing in May and June, especially if you do not like ski lifts, as there aren’t any.
To sum it up, great time, excellent weather, good hotel, but, for my family with young children, it would not be the best of solutions. Perhaps, for older couples, nature lovers and similar.
Unique Quality: Great location, great meals, good staff

Geiranger's best run hotel
I have stayed here many times and each time I am impressed by the way this family run hotel maintains it high standard.
The reception lobby is palatial and the staff are generally very well trained. Things do get a little be overly regimented in the dining room. This is mainly due to the buffet style and the need to get people seated and happy as soon as possible.
Unique Quality: There is a night club, and for groups one can request a talk by one of the family in the conference room on many Norway subjects.
An automobile museum exists in the basement and features some outstanding cars like early Studebakers and Buicks which were used to transfer people from the various ships that called in to the Geiranger fjord in the 1920's and 1930's. The cars were also used for touring from the hotel. These big American cars proved tough enough to handle the rough Norwegian roads in that era.

Hotel Union
Hotel Union is one of those old, classic hotels where they've stayed in touch with time and rehabilitated their facilities to have all modern amenities - while preserving the charm and atmosphere of the old parts. The view from the hotel is fantastic, the restaurant is good and the surrounding hiking, viewing nature and picturetaking possibilites are immense!
