Dalsnibba down to Geiranger port

by johnmcclean

Hi,
Were arriving in Geiranger via cruise ship in August. Could we get a taxi up to Dalsnibba viewpoint and then walk back down to Geiranger on our own safely ,with active children aged 10-13 yrs.
Is there a well marked trail or do we need a guide.
How long would the taxi ride take and at what cost
How long would it take us to hike down from Dalsnibba

Many thanks

hi,
that is really quite some distance to hike, I have done it only by car, so I am not sure if its possible to do it within the few hours that most cruiseships will stay there. In addition to the taxi-cost you will also have to pay the toll of about 80 kronen for the dalsnibba-road.

The distance is about 20 km long, and I would estimate you'll need at least four hours.

There is no other trail but the main road so you would have to walk along it, no need for a guide but it may not be safe with children that age as there may be a lot of traffic - all cars and coaches take that road as it's the only one out of Geiranger in that direction. And while still on Dalsnibba it could be dangerous too if the children start chasing each other or playing. The slopes of the mountain are rocky and steep and there are hardly any barriers.

Travel Tips for Geiranger

Petrol in Norway

by MikeAtSea

Norway is one of the largest petrol producing nations on earth, one would assume that petrol is relativley cheap. Think again - a litre of petrol set you back over US$ 3 or EUR 2.60 - take this in to consideration when planning a road trip, since fuel is almost double to other countries on earth!

Seeing the cruise ships passing by

by Hildeal

waking up the sounds of fjords and seeing the cruise ships passing by and knowing we were pretty isolated up there. one day we saw some seals passing and some months before a white whale was seen passing the fjords

looking down at the fjords

by Hildeal

I could look down at the fjords all day. I even had my painting equipment with me. Some people from the cruise ship actually waved when they saw us up there. Maybe they thought we were native geiranger people and long time residents ?

packing list

by Hildeal

some extra pair of socks in case of bad weather. Rain clothes. perhaps an extra pair of shoes. it would be wise to bring some toilets paper in case there is no paper present at the bathroms at the harbour Bring som extra films. You'll suddenly find someting to photograf and when you're looking for more films your motive is vanished a good tent. sleeping bags food you'll probably meet some mosquitos in the evening.

Electricity

For 'grounded' plugs, the "chuko" plug and receptacle with side grounding contacts is used (see picture)

The receptacle will also accept the not-grounded plug shown in the previous tip.
