Little yellow balls?

by leics

I'm asking this on behalf of friends who are campervanning around Europe and are in Bodø at the moment.

They keep seeing 'little yellow balls on short rods along the roadside. They are about the size of a ping pong ball and the rod is about 6 inches (around 15cm) tall. They are irregular distances apart, positioned sometimes low down in the grass, sometimes high up on rocks, sometimes near the edge of a road and sometimes a couple of metres away.'

They would love to know what they are for and would be grateful for an explanation, if you have one. And so would I. :-)

Thanks in advance.

Those are markers for corners in the border between ground owned by the public for the road and the surrounding land.

That's interesting. I did a job in Cambridge (UK) a few years ago and we put A-boards (those advertising things that block the pavement and really annoy the pedestrians) outside our restaurant. The local council came and took them all away.

Our building manager then pointed to us that there were brass dots on the pavement which were the "building lines" and that anything behind those dots was our property and we could do what we liked with it.

We got our A-boards back, an apology from the council and a small sum in recompense for our lost trade.

Property maybe theft but once you've got it tell everyone what's yours LOL ;)

Thank you!

that's really interesting....and I never know about the brass things in the pavement either, John!

Many thanks indeed. I'll email friends and put their minds at rest. :-))

Sorry, nothing to add to the thread but I didn't know about the brass dots either.

Hehe, inverted tourism! Never ceases to amaze me what tourists are wondering about! I can say so as I have travelled quite a bit myself, and I have probably asked weird questions myself...
Once in my youth I was a museum guide and I met my Japanese tour group outside at the gate, fresh off the bus; they were all crowding around a small signboard placed in the middle of the front lawn, snapping photos and videofilming the signboard, themselves sitting on the lawn, leaning low to the sign, smiling and enjoying themselves. The sign said very clearly - in the Norwegian - "do not step on the grass"!
This message is anyhow a rare one in Norway and this signboard was removed immediately after I told the story to the director.

:-)

When I emailed my friends they said they'd more-or-less guessed already (they'd noticed numbers on the little balls). They're having an excellent time in the Lotofen islands at the moment but will no doubt have more 'weird' questions as they continue their travels across Europe.

Thanks to all who replied.

Go to Saltstraumen. You can reach it by Bus within short time. First there's a huge Bridge (80 meters high) and it's also one of the worlds strongest tidal cxurrents. Very impressing. Most buildings look very new in Bodo, because it was bombed in WWII. This makes the Town look pretty, but it's sad if you think about the reason. I met nice Locals there.

Pelle - the police car

by KykeliKokos

PELLE - Norway's cutest and most famous police-car!
All children in Norway knows Pelle Politibil, the talking police-car (sssh, it's a secret that he can speak..) from TV and children's books- and it's always popular to meet him in "person."
When Pelle isn't visiting children elsewhere, he can be seen outside the local police station.

Having fun on a warm summer day

by maritagnes

In really warm summer days the "Rådhusbasseng" - the outdoor pool in front of the town hall is a gathering point for small children playing in the water and climbing the stone walrus.
The pool is always filled with water in summer, but too often the weather doesn't invite to bathing.

Did you know that the area around Bodø is the 'land of the sea eagles'? There isn't a place in whole Europe where you can see so many of those huges birds. It's impressive if you're out in the nature and one of those rare birds surrounds you! It's as well the symbol of the town Bodø and almost everywhere you can see at least a sign of those birds. So, don't wonder about it - the citizens of Bodø live for theirs sea eagles. Or at least I got this impression... :)
