Grateful for the heavy curtains

I stayed in this hotel during the midnight sun period. Was glad to find heavy curtains that stopped light comming into the room. The room and bathroom were clean. There was an electric teapot and a selection of tea and instant coffee in the room, which was nice.

Unique Quality: Nice location, next to the marina and harbour.

What to do in winter

by cathy9510usa

Hi,

I'm trying to decide whether to take the northbound or the southbound Hurtigruten trip in February or March. The northbound trio seems to have a 3 hour stopover in Bodo. What does the city have to offer, at least to passengers from the ship who have to walk from the quay?

Thanks very much for your help.

Cathy

Hello,

Bodo is the second largest city in North-Norway and has more to offer than a small coastal village. Bodo harbour is right in the city center.
Take a look at this link: http://www.bodohavn.no/?ac_id=60
Explore the page. It might give you the idea of how the harbour look like.
Have a nice cruise.
Best regards,
Georeiser

Something you need to be aware of is that the Hurtigruten timetable seemed to us designed to allow the ships to leave on time even if they arrive late. We picked one up in Hammerfest. It was so late arriving that it simply docked unloaded/loaded and left, all in about 20 minutes. There were some very unhappy tourists who'd expected to have plenty of time to walk around the town (at least 90 minutes I think).

I can't say if the above was a common occurance, but it was our experience. We didn't mind since we were only using the Hurtigruten to get from Hammerfest to Tromso.

Yes, thank you, I did know that. I took Hurtigruten last year and at some stops we were supposed to be able to get off, but they cancelled that because the time was too short before setting off again.

Yes, unfortunalty that was also my experience :
Hurtigruten is not a cruiseline, BUT a cargo-ship with a tight schedule that takes passangers as well.
And they are trying to sell their tours as well and many of them take back the passangers at another port and you mostly dont have a lot of time for a walk in the ports on your own.

Yes, I passed through Harstad twice, once in either direction, and both times I didn't bother getting off because the time was too short. I didn't mind, though, because I was there for the gorgeous scenery, and I had my fill of that.

Harbor breakwall with boat docks

by yooperprof

Take a stroll out the breakwall to get a sense of the dimension of the harbor. It's not hard to see why this was such a desirable place to establish a major transportation center for the northland! I like a lot of the newer architecture along the harborfront - it seems to blend in well with the surrounding natural features.

National day in Bodø

by maritagnes

If you happen to be around on a 17th of May, the celebration of the National day is quite a spectacular event.
The childrens' procession in the morning
with national costumes, little Norwegian flags, toy flutes, brass bands, happy smiling faces and lots of ice cream is a beautiful experience. Everyone is outside watching along the street.
Later in the afternoon there will be another procession for grown-ups with all kinds of organizations (sport clubs, choirs...) represented, lots of show and fun and the red-dressed high-school graduates (russ) putting even more colour to the day.

Packing List

by maritagnes

There's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong kind of clothes :)) Be prepared for wind and/or rain when you visit in summer. Temperatures can range from cold to really warm in summer, so be prepared for anything from 10-25 deg C (50-77 deg F) Pharmacies are called "Apotek". Be aware that many medicines which may be easier to buy abroad need a prescription in Norway (eg anthibiotics and heavy painkillers)
Be sure to bring the supply you'll need of your usual medicines. Easy to get all kind of films and photo equipment - films may be more expensive than home.

the whole archipelago is incredible but i camped at this amazing beach right outside of henningsvaer that is definitely worth stopping out. the water, however, doesn't seem to get much warmer than about 13 or 14 degrees.
