Reine Rorbuer: Idyllic fishermen's cabins

Rorbuer (singular: rorbu) are the typical fishermen's cabins that you see all over Lofoten (see VT tip here for a description of rorbuer in general), and Reine has an excellent selection which take full advantage of the fantastic location of this village. We would go as far as to say that this is one of the nicest places we have ever stayed.

Most of the rorbuer in the main part of Reine are managed by "Reine Rorbuer", who also run the "Gammelbua" restaurant. Their website has an interactive map showing pictures and details of all the individual rorbuer, and the booking system allows you to select which one you want. We chose one of the higher class cabins ("Jon"), as we wanted to make sure that we were comfortable if the weather was nasty. We were very pleased with what we got.

Our rorbu was spacious, comfortable and cosy, with a large living/dining/kitchen area, a double bedroom and a second bedroom with bunks (see additional photos). There was also a washroom and shower, with separate toilet, and a large hallway. The cabin had central heating with underfloor heating in the hallway and bathroom. There was also a wood stove in the living room, although we didn't need to use that. The kitchen was well stocked with crockery, pots and pans etc, so self-catering was really easy - you just need to provide the food.

All of the rorbuer at Reine are quite modern, but built in the traditional style - simple rectangular cabins with red stained wood walls and pitched slate or turf roofs. Most are built on wooden stilts over the rocks or even out over the water. They all have great views of the harbour and mountains, but ours was one of two on the highest point of the rocky outcrop, so we had fantastic views from our windows on three sides.

The management were particularly friendly, even offering to bring us some dinner on our first night as the restaurant was closed. They were particularly helpful and made us feel very welcome.
