 | Svolvær Reviews | Tips 1 - 3 of 3 | | This is a basic, rather functional 3-star hotel in a long, 2-storey modern building right at the end of the main quay in Svolvær. Frankly, this is not a hotel that you want to spend too much time in. It is fine for an overnight stop, but if you are spending more than one night in Svolvær you might be better off in one of the other hotels, such as the Rica. The rooms were actually quite large, but the decor is a little tired and the lobby areas a bit soulless. Also, the breakfast was quit poor. OK, we turned-up quite late, but still within the advertised times, but there was very little of the cold buffet left and no coffee.
Very convenient for the Hurtigrute. Cheap (relatively). Nice views. UPDATE: As of January 2007, the website says this hotel is temporarily closed. This hotel has a bit of a schizophrenic feel, mainly because it has two locations. The main hotel is more of what you'd expect from a full-service hotel, with a bar, dance club, and restaurant. The annex is quite interesting, as it's co-located with the bus station. Oh and did I mention they're demolishing half the building? We were in the annex, but it really wasn't bad at all. Reception was friendly, the room was comfy, and a so-so breakfast was served in the common area. The hotel was a member of the Skanplus consortium, so we got about a NOK 100 discount on our stay. (NOTE: As of January 2007, the SkanPlus program has been discontinued) Baggage storage was no problem, as they were used to catering to Hurtigruten passengers. A rorbu was once a domicile for fisher folk [men - not a sexist term but a matter of fact!] during the season. They have been converted into tourist accommodation. In much of Lofoten there are 'rorbuer' built specifically for the latter purpose but the ones here were the genuine article. The reception area, which is like a living museum, has photos showing how it once was. The rorbu is not a particularly cheap option - comparable with 3/4 star hotels but gives a special and more authentic air to a holiday in these parts. There is a restaurant [separate tip] which supplies breakfasts to take back to the rorbu - and, believe me, they are big enough to make a substantial part of your lunch as well. If you prefer, you can self cater in the rorbu. Suberb scenery and great interest in the immediate area. Highly recommended.
See above - stunning scenery and very symptomatic of a dying way of life.
