Birkebeineren is considered the best ski stadium in the world, both for winter and summer events.
In 1994 during the Olympic Games, Birkebeineren housed the cross-country, sit-ski and biathlon competitions.
For the ones interested in organizing the own biathlon competition, the specialized section of Birkebeineren can be rented.
Both Birkebeineren Ski Stadium and Lysgardsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena can be also used during summer.
Birkebeineren Ski Stadium is a good starting point for hiking, jogging and mountain-biking, while Lysgardsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena's K120 hill can be used for summer ski jumping.
Both Birkebeineren Ski Stadium and Lysgardsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena can be also used during summer.

The skijumps were built for the olympics in 1994. From the top you have a great view of the city! Right next to the skijumps is a restaurant where you can sit outside and enjoy the view.
Nearby are also some of the other arenas from the olympics, like Håkons Hall, Birkebeineren Skistadium, Kanthaugen Freestylearena and the the Lillehammer Olympic Bobarena.
Lillehammer Olympic Park includes Hakons Hall, Lysgardsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena, Birkebeineren Ski Stadium, Kanthaugen Freestyle Arena and Lillehammer Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track built for the Olympic Winter Games in 1994.
Beside the sport facilities, Hakons Hall is also housing the Norwegian Olympic Museum.
In Lysgardsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena with the chairlift or by stairs you can arrive to the top of the ski jump and have a magnificent view of Lillehammer.
During winter in the Bobsleigh and Luge Track the tourists or locals can try bobsleighing or bob rafting and in the summer they can try bobsleigh on wheels.

Can anyone tell me where to get an apartment in lillehammer near the centre of town or as close as possible, any help people can offer on this would be great, thanks michael

I do not know any details at this moment, but I have two suggestions, no, three:
1)Check what Gjestebu has on offer (you'll find it on my VT Lillehammer accommodation pages).
2)Check with the tourist office - they should have an idea and are quite happy about not-the-normal-run-of-questions; just search Lillehammer and tourist information etc. on the web, and you'll come up with something. There are not any competing tourist info agencies in Norway. If you are visiting out-of-school/college season, the student housing will be converted to renat apartments via the tourist office.
3) Check with "Høyskolen i Lillehammer" - check www.hil.no . This is the local university college with about 2000 students, and they have an outfit assisting their students and lecturers with flats for the term or any relevant number of months or years. Without knowing exactly myself, you should be able to find something through student services department etc.
4) If you come to Lillehammer for a hospital stunt, the hospital will have flats for trainees etc - get in direct touch with them.
5) If coming for skiing, consider staying in the resorts near Lillehammer, Sjusjøen or Nordseter. Check places via the tourist info pages and from there get in direct touch with whatever outfit you find suitable. Or in Lillehammer, try Birkebeineren, just next to the Olympic Park.
