Hornsjø Høyfjellshotell is so near my own mountain cabin that I have no need of staying overnight there, thus my experience is from days visits and friends who have stayed there.
The general ambience is that of a bit worn hotel in a gentle mountain terrain - very quiet and nice. The lake Hornsjøen is nearby, providing a nice southern vista from the hotel. During summers there is canoeing and fishing here. Otherwise, the hotel offers various activities and sports, but very much low key and nothing hi-tech that takes the experience away from nature. A great place for families during winter - great skiing and very good for children. Children 0-6 stay for free, 7-14 half price. Per adult NOK 450 incl. breakfast.
Unique Quality: The place is a bit isolated and offers the right thing if you want to get away from everything. Very gently rolling hills provide easy skiing during winters, and both summer and winter the place is perfectly suited for children. Add the distance of 18 km to the community of Øyer with the Hafjell Alpine Skiing Centre and Hunderfossen Family Park, and the picture is nearly complete. There is a restaurant and a cafe, both very modestly priced.
Directions: From Øyer you turn eastward up the hill and past Pellestova. Follow signage to Hornsjø. From the seasonal road Birkebeinerveien take the turn-off to Hornsjø via Sjusjøen or Nordseter . There are signs, but a road map is useful.
Hornsjo is a lake located about 30 km east of Lillehammer, past Sjusjoen and Nordseter. Closeby is Hornsjo Hoyfjellshotell and some huts and summer farms. Through the history this hotel has been a hotel, a school and a giest house. Now again it is a hotel, but hosting educational courses in the season.
Excellent skiing, fishing i the lake. A good place to stay if you are transiting east-west, and if you want to get away from the city life.
Unique Quality: Far away into the mountains east of Lillehammer, all the quiet and peace you can imagine.
Fairly cheap, NOK 440 incl breakfast per person on a double room basis. Children age 7-14 half price.
Directions: You need to travel past either Sjusjoen or Nordseter and continue east along Birkebeiner veien/road until the turnoff to Hornsjoen. During winter road access is from Aastdalen in the east. The Lillehammer road is closed.
