Lillehammer's "big street" is very pleasant - a long stretch of it is pedestrianized, and in (or near) Storgata you'll find most of the town's restaurants, bars, pubs and shops - and in summer, quite a few outdoor cafes. Most of the buildings lining the cobbled Storgata are low, colourful wooden houses (many of which are protected) - very charming even on the rainy, miserable August day when we visited, so I guess it must be postcard-perfect on a snowy December night. ;o)
The shops are generally open 09-17 on weekdays (until 19 on Thursdays), 10-16 on Saturdays and, like in all of Norway, shops are closed on Sundays.
