Anker Hotel viewed from Ankerbrua bridge by Ekaterinburg I chose the Anker after an extensive search for a double with breakfast for less than Euro, 100 a night. Though not expecting much, I was very pleasantly surprised by what was on offer at The Anker. I had booked a Twin as 'double' beds in hotels are usually designed for people much smaller than us but was offered a choice when we arrived. We ended up with a king-sized double in a more-spacious-than-average room, at no extra cost. The bed was extremely comfortable ( very important point), the room had been recently decorated and everything was fresh and spotlessly clean. The hotel is currently being renovated and downstairs could certainly do with a re-vamp but the bedroom was perfect. Breakfast (served from 7 to 10 on weekdays and 7-11 at weekends ) is fantastic. In an expensive city like Oslo, a good breakfast is essential and here you can happily eat enough to keep you going until dinner. We had huge plates of scrambled eggs, fried potatoes and sausages but there was a cold buffet as well. Also plentiful supplies of cereals, bread, fruit and yougurt, with decent coffee and orange juice on tap. A more than satisfying start to the day. At reception there's a small bar, seating area with TV and free tea and coffee available but that's about it as regards facilities.
The strange thing about the Anker is that its location which used to be held against it , is now one of its prime attractions. Situated right at the end of uninspiring Storgata, it's right on the bank of the Aker river and across the bridge is the hippest area in town - ever-trendy and increasingly popular, Grunerlokka. It's an easy 10 minute walk from Central Station but several tram lines stop right across the road from the entrance. Staff here were young, friendly and unbelievably helpful. From upgrading our accommodation when we arrived, to checking on airport connections and providing large umbrellas when it rained, nothing was too much trouble. To be honest, I've become so used to indifferent hotel staff that I'd forgotten how pleasant it is to be greeted by a smile and genuine warmth. Absolutely top marks to the reception staff here. The Anker is not beautiful on the outside but for location, price, top class breakfast and comfortable accomodation, you won't do better. BTW, I made my booking with hotelbooking.com. The price they offered was significantly lower than the other internet booking sites. Beware of giving out your credit card info, do not book this hostel if you could not confirm your arrival date I did a bed reservation through Hostelworld for staying at Anker hostel on 3rd June 2009. However, due to some reason I can’t make it to Oslo and I have send an email to the hostel on 28th May (which is 7days ahead of the actual booked date) to inform them and one of the staff, Tom Erik replied my email telling me the bed reservation has been cancelled (on 29th May) According to the cancellation policy, customers can cancel their reservation free of charge up to 2 days before arrival. However, I was surprise to be notified by my bank that there is a overseas transaction showing the balance of the booking (205NOK) has been deducted from my credit card although I have already made the cancellation for my bed through the same email on 28 May. Just want to share my bad experience contacting this hostel. I have tried to email the hostel 3 times but no respond has been made till today. Giving them the benefit of doubt they were busy or are rectifying the issue, I have been very patience and waiting for more than 2 week but what disappointed me was no single respond have been received. Therefore, my advise to other traveller is, always make sure you check your credit card transaction especially if you have made any cancellation. Second, do not book this hostel if you are unsure of your arrival. It seems that cancellation is not possible, or rather they are dishonest. Theme: Hostel
