This hotel was amazing! I had been traveling throughout Europe and the Grand Hotel Oslo was the most memorable. The hotel location was great, central and everything within walking distance. We had a mishap with the taxi driver and a manager there had upgraded our rooms, she really didn't even have to do that, but was very sweet. My two daughters stayed on the Ladies Floor, I believe the Suzann Pettersen room. It was light, airy, and I felt that if they opened the windows they would open to a beach! I stayed in a Junior Suite and it was fabulous! It was large, spacious, and the french balcony with a view with the city was spectacular. This hotel's old style was just great and the buffet was one of the best. All in all, this hotel was really great.

    Directions: City center.

    A great Buffett Breakfast

    by

Not sure if we just got and older room but I would say it was about a 3 star for the room, clean but outdated. The best part of the hotel we thought was the location and the Dinning room. It was about a 5 block walk to the train staion so not too bad. But you were withing walking distance to all the sights.

Unique Quality: Make sure to eat Breakfast in the dinning room.

    Beautiful and living large

    by

Unique Quality: I will describe the unique qualities of this hotel as I didn't stay here. It is one of the nicer hotels in the older district of Oslo. Perfectly situated off of Karl Johans gate you are surrounded by cafe's, bars, restaurants and beautiful parks that Oslo has to offer. You are right in the city center so the location couldn't be better. The top floor has some amazing views and apparently has a pretty nice penthouse for various famous and infamous guests. The restaurant in the bottom floor is very nice.

    The Grand Hotel

    by

This is the old style classy hotel of choice in Oslo next to the Continental Hotel. The famous norwegian poet/writer Ibsen used to sit at the hotels cafe every day and consume "liquid inspiration".

    Unique Quality: Classy and central

  • Slightly faded european 'Grand Hotel'

    by

We had a comfortable stay in the Grand Hotel. Spacious room could have done with some refurbishment, very poor lighting and overheated. Air conditioning appeared to provide warm air (September). Front desk service varied from terrible (when we checked in were told our room number, but not where it was located, dispite 3 porter talking at desk no one offered to help with bags!) - but at other times staff could not have been more helpful! This may be Nowegian 5 star hotel but it would not be awarded this rating anywhere I have been. Dispite this, we would recommend the hotel but not at the rack rate! A great place to stay.

Unique Quality: Old fashioned hotel in european grand style. Great location, central for all sights. Has small swimming pool and great breakfast buffet.

Directions: Great location opposite parliament building. Very central

  • 5 Star... Probably not any longer...

    by

To set the stage... I paid 990 NOK ($145) for a special promotion twin room - ending up in the new annex of the hotel. A bargain on paper, still even a promotion only decreases expectations so far.

Service in the hotel was fine. Not overwhelmingly proactive but courteous and efficient; the breakfast in Grand Cafe was another matter. They have had problems for a number of years, and apparently still do. It felt like a nice aged setting staffed by an average McDonalds manager. Clearing of tables was random and slow, coffee had to be aggressively pursued, and the buffet selection limited as well as slow to be replenished. Now, Oslo has charismatic young upbeat people working even in 7elevens - how they can fail to staff and manage quality at a luxury restaurant is beyond me...

The 7th floor room was large, but otherwise on an average 4 star level. Television was aged and channel selection limited. A patio was available, which could have been a bonus if it didn't sport tarmac and one plastic chair a la roadside motel - needless to say I didn't spend much time out there.

The athletic facilities were varied. The pool is about 30 by 15 feet which I would consider too small if 4+ people want to swim (unless they are fond of physical contact ) but located right next to the skybar which is convenient. The shower and sauna facilities were clean and nice, and the hotel offers health treatments. But, the "Gym" was a serious stretch of the definition. One italian made multi machine, one exercise cycle and one treadmill is not a Hotel Gym by any earthly standard. Obviously, just fulfilling the 5 star requisites are more important that offering quality training for the guests.

I would rather stay in a smaller well managed 4 star establishment any day, but still, considering the discount and geographic location, I was moderately satisfied. If the room had been at rack rate I would have been upset.

Unique Quality: Quite a historic setting, a large number of artworks, an old world reception and a most central location.

Grand Hotel, is situated at Karl Johan, just across the road from the Parlament. It's a beautifull hotel, and it's expensive. It has a swiming pool and good restaurants. It has some amazing suites. It's a member of 'World Hotels Deluxe Collection'.

We paid around $200 for one night in a suite. Room enough for three with servants and concubines.

Unique Quality: Nice and old. I'd say a bit overrated since it appears it has been a while since it was remodeled.

Directions: On Karl Johan Street, the main street leading up to the castle.

Oslo's best hotel

by ChristinaC about Grand Hotel Oslo

Grand Hotel is one of the best hotels in Oslo.
The rooms have some of the best beds I have ever been sleeping in! The service is great, and I really dont have anything bad to say about my stay. I didnt have the time to try any of the facilities, cos I only stayed there for 2 days... At the hotel there is a indoor swimming pool, fitness center, beauty studio, and a hairdressing salon...
Located at Karl Johan street, makes shopping very easy, cos you just have to go out the door, and you will be at the shopping street, and it's easy to use to much money.

Wonderful stay

We stayed at the Bristol on our way to the fjord country and the Grand Hotel on our way back. Both are wonderfully situated and really fine hotels. Highly recommended. The Scandanavian breakfast buffet is terrific.

Nice traditional hotel

by TripAdvisor Member City_FolkTravelBugs

Stayed at the Grand in November 2005 for 3 nights. Compared to prices of lower standard hotels it was incredibly good value for money (255GBP). The public areas were elegent and appeared well kept though we did not inspect them at length. We didn't eat in the hotel but the breakfasts were excellent, huge variety from hot breakfasts to fruit, cereal or cold meats/salmon. Loved the Etoile bar on the top floor, it had a really good atmosphere and was reasonably priced for Oslo. However, our room, 273, was directly above the hotel service area and I was woken up at 6.30 am every morning by very noisy deliveries.(My boyfriend managed to sleep right through though.) The room location probably reflected the price we paid. The reception staff could have been more friendly however they were efficient.Overall a great hotel but probably wouldn't pay 5 star prices to stay there.
