Booked through Expedia for this "budget hotel" at $130/night (Oslo expensive), and satisfied with the location as other reviews have pointed out. The hotel room is small and definitely budget-sized but well arranged. They made the single bed very comfy, and the desk is nice with a strong lamp. The bathroom is understandably small but equipped with a powerful shower with quick hot/cool controls and a nice "all-over" shampoo. There was no safety deposit box in the room, so I asked the front desk. They do have a small tower of 14 safety deposit boxes in the luggage storage room which ranged from a flat small one to one which could fit a small backpack. I chose the mid-range size to put in my laptop. A deposit of 200 NOK (about $40 US) required for the safety deposit box ($ to be returned later of course). With my booking thru Expedia, breakfast was not included so I paid 50 NOK for it. That is just about $10 and the breakfast really filled me up --- with sausage links, eggs, cold cuts, fruits and several kinds of bread and cracker. Well worth it in an expensive city like Oslo. The Oslo S main train station is really close and easy to find through the map.
very close to the main tourist road - Karl Johans and gthe central train station.
Directions: The hotel is to your left side when you exit at the side of the train station with the Tourist Info Office. Get the free map at the station to guide you.

This was a decent place to stay while sampling Oslo. It's convenient for the station and the main shopping streets. The surrounding area is admittedly a little down on its heels, particularly by scandinavian standards, but the hotel itself it quite clean and efficient.
The rooms here are quite small and can be noisy with street life if your at the front (I love this). The bathrooms are clean but again very small. TV has about seven channels including one English news network.
All the staff we saw over several days spoke good English and were smiling and helpful whenever we saw them.
Be aware that storing your luggage at the hotel is not very secure as we were just given the keys to the storage room and could have walked out the hotel with someone else's luggage with no problems as no checks were done on what we collected.
Three minutes from Oslo Central station and six from the Bus Terminal. One minute from the Cathedral and the bottom of Karl Johsn Street. Many restaurants within a couple of minutes walk, and 50m from Burger King if your not too adventurous with your food.

Hotel Thon Astoria, Oslo

I stayed here for one night. The hotel itself is rated as 3 stars and I paid about $80 US (reservation was made at the last minute) for a single bedroom. The hotel itself is fine and the staff are friendly, although if you need some peace and quiet (but then you might not!) there are a number of bars on the street that can become fairly loud on Friday and Saturday night. In this case, you should request a room that doesn't face the street.
The area in which the hotel is located is fairly safe although a few blocks southwards it can get a bit dodgy. But then again, this is Oslo, which is a fairly safe city to begin with.
NOTE: Becareful when you make reservations online and that you read the terms of that particular price carefully. Some prices do not specify that they only apply to those who are enrolled in some kind of membership progam.
