Public transport

by manuna

I was reading certain "getting to"-instruction. There I see "streetcar line 1". What kind of transport is it? Is it type of a tram? Or is it the name of Oslo metro? Thank you.

Re: Public transport

streetcar is another name for a tram. In Oslo they have both the Tram and the Metro
;-)

The different modes of transportation in Oslo:

Streetcar: Norwegian 'trikk'. A tram, operating mainly in the centre, but some lines extend to some of the suburban areas. Nice for a spot of sightseeing, to get the feel of the city.

Underground/metro/tube: Norwegian 't-bane'. Faster than the trams, especially over distance and covers more of suburbia. The tube sign is a blue T inside a circle.

Bus: No. 'buss'. I take it no explanation is necessary here :p

Ferry: There are some ferries that operate mainly in summer, plus the ferry over to Nesodden. It's a nice way to spend a day sightseeing the fjord.

All of the above use the same ticketing system. It's probably easier for a tourist to use the tram and tube, mainly because there are so few lines (ah, our tiny little capital) and the bus lines are harder to figure out if you're just there for a couple of days.

There is no tram/streetcar No. 1. It's the underground that has the lines 1 - 6. The trams are running lines 11 - 19 and the buses from 20 and further on. But from the old days, when West was West and East was East and they never met, what now is the underground in the west operated like trams, where you could by tickets on board and you had to pull the string to make it halt. That's why many in the west of Oslo still call the underground "trikk" (tram/streetcar). Underground line No 1 goes to Frognerseteren, up to around 500 m above sealevel, with a lovely view over the Oslofjord, apart from that it's being reconstructed and doesn't run for the next year or so.

So I can't get to Holmenkollen by it, only by car?

Re: Public transport

By replacement buses (using the same line number; 1, actually 1B and 1C respectively, depending on where on the line you are going)

Thank you.

Travel Tips for Oslo

Expensive city

by tini58de

In 2006 Oslo has been ranked the world's most expensive city in a survey by the global bank UBS - and expensive it is! If you want to get some tips on how to save a little money (or rather not spend a hilarious amount of money) in Oslo, do have a look at the website of the magazine Streetwise, which can also be downloaded!

Oslo Pass

by Bernd_L

You want to discover Oslo easily and don't want to spend that much money? Buy an Oslo Pass! There is no cheaper and easier way to see Oslo.

It offers unlimited free travel by bus, tram, subway, boat and local trains within Oslo, free access to a lot of museums and attractions as well as free entrance into two swimming pools. Furthermore you get discounts for several shops, restaurants, car rentals etc.

I arrived at the Oslo Central...

by Luis_Alberto

I arrived at the Oslo Central Station coming by train from Copenhagen, Denmark. Right in front of the station, is the Karl Johans gate, Avenue, at the other end of the Avenue is the Royal Palace, which was off limits to visitors, since the Royal Family, does reside there. The Karl Johans gate is one of the most famous promenades of Oslo. What called my attention, inmediately after arriving to Oslo, was the cleanliness of the city and its great surroundings. There is plenty to do and see in Oslo, for about three to four days. This is the picture of The Royal Palace built in 1848.

Must sees:

MUST VISITS:

Vikingship Museum & Kon-Tiki museum
Aker Brygge for some bites & a stroll
Akershus Fortress
Nobel Town Hall
Holmenkollen Ski Jump Area
Vigelandparken Sculpture Park. Vigelandparken sculptures, and its tranquil setting.

A swim in the clean part of Olsofjord - past the museums.

The Fountain

by bpacker

Honestly, the whole existence of Vigelandsparken started off with this fountain. Early in 1907, a blue print of the fountain was drawn out and Gustav Vigeland was commissioned to make the Fountain. However, as time passed, not enough money was raised for the fountain and pissed by waste of time, Vigeland just made sculpture after sculpture. Eventually, these granite sculptures that eventually were placed around the later Monolith... In the center of the basin, six giants hold a really large rice bowl and from it, water is supposed to spill down around them. Unfortuanately when I was there, it was as dry as a bone. But no loss, I enjoyed it all the same.
