The role of public Participation

by Silvano64

Hi, im glady to be a membership in this site.
I need to know the role of public participation in the designation of World Heritage(ie in Roros). As I expect to be there in early october to visit a site.

Not sure I understand your question. Are you asking if Roros, being a World Heritage site, will mean that it will be crowded when you visit in early October?

I am not sure what you want to know either. As far as your participation, you simply enjoy it. If you want to know how these sites are chosen, you might enjoy reading the UNESCO explanation of how they make their choices.

"UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee is the decision-making body of the Convention. Individual countries bring their nominations to the Committee which makes its selections based on specific selection criteria:"

You can see the criteria at http://www.unesco.ca/en/activity/culture/heritagesites.aspx

Or check the World Heritage web site for Roros at http://www.worldheritageroros.no/

Welcome to Virtual Tourist (VT). I hope you enjoy your trip to Norway. You'll get a lot more information that's already been written here on VT by typing Roros into the VT Search Window above and visiting the Travel Pages with lots of photos, reviews and Tips for hotels, restaurants and things to do.

Travel Tips for Røros

Walk around town

by Ken_Weaver

Just get out of your car and walk around. The whole village is about 1/2 mile in diameter. You can peak thru the small windows into the shops with grass cover roofs. During the summer the main street is closed to vehicle traffic.See the Røros website at
http://www.rorosinfo.com/e_index.html
and you can take a virtual tour of the town

Sunset comes late in the Evening

by Ken_Weaver

The sun sets very late in the summer. We were in Røros in late June and I took this picture at midnight at a lake just outside of town. We were in the countryside looking for my wife's great-grandmother's house. She had seen a picture of it taken many years ago and thought that she would recognize it again when she saw it. Here we are driving down people's driveways at midnight looking for a house in my wife's memory. I was afraid we would get shot as intruders since all of the residents had probably gone to bed already!

Protect your shoes!

by diocletianvs

When going to Olavsgruva expect that you'll be walking in an old copper mine 50 metres under the surface.
If you don't want your shoes to be soaked in reddish mud protect them with some plastic bags.
(Be careful while walking - this way you're on a very slippery ground!)

Hessdal phenomenon

by diocletianvs

Some 30 km north of Røros, in Hessdalen, you can observe Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs)!
At the end of 1981 through 1984, residents of the Valley became concerned and alarmed about strange, unexplained lights that appeared at many locations throughout the Valley.
Project Hessdalen was established in the summer of 1983. The observation is still going on. An automatic measurement station was put up in Hessdalen in August 1998.

The place is the home of the "Norsk UFO-senter".

Hitterdal Church

by Ken_Weaver

Outside of Røros is the Hitterdal Church. We were looking at the headstones in the churchyard for my wife's ancesters. This church was quite different from others we had seen in the area but was the most interesting!
