Transportation from Trondheim to Bergen

by pp9

I need to make my way from Trondheim to Bergen with the possibility of one night stay over on the way. The cruise ship Hurtigruten seemed very expensive yet I would love to see one of the fjords. Is there another way to manage this via another boat charter or rail or car? How long would it take?
Thank you

There's no railway line along the western coast, so you'd have to go via Oslo. There are various express boats available, none that go all the way from Trondheim to Bergen - see www.fjord1.no - but you could of course go by bus part of the way. On the fjord1 website you'll also find info about the express bus Bergen - Trondheim, and other bus routes in the fjord area. Also check www.nor-way.no for bus travel in Norway.

Or you could rent a car... (But that might well end up being just as expensive as Hurtigruten...)

Hurtigruten has a Trondheim to Bergen offer at around 960 kroners running right now. The bus would run you around 600 kroners (I believe, easy to check at their website). The bus actually takes several ferries and is a nice ride. Car rental would inevitably be more.

Travel Tips for Trondheim

City Built right by Water

by Ken_Weaver

Trondheim is a seaport located at the mouth of a river. Buildings sit right on the waterfront. I recommend renting a car. The city is just big enough to make it difficult to get around but not big enough to have a great transportation system.

Stiftsgården
Where our royal princess wedding was celebrated in May(congratulations Märtha and Ari!). I visited Trondheim only a couple of days later, and there was still flower decorations on the balcony.
I found the garden with its benches a lovely place to sit down and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Rosenborg Ballklub

by Bjorgvin

Rosenborg Ballklub is the pride of the city, and the entire nation since they made such an impact on the European Championship League. The best football club in Norway, and champions year after year. It is now eleven or twelve years in a row!! Probably a world record. Home ground (25,000) is at Lerkendal Stadium, and the atmosphere is fantastic there.

Wind and waterproof

by jonkb

It's a good idea to bring an all weather jacket. The weather seldom stays the same for long, and once you've desided to go out it might turn from sunshine to rain and wind. You should prepare for all kinds of weather in the summer: Bring both the t-shirt and the warm pullover. Depending on what you are going to take pictures of: A polarizer might not be a bad idea.

Skiing in Oppdal

by Elibra

Oppdal, the mountain district in central Norway, is also well-known as Norways largest downhill skiing area. You will find 16 lifts and 27 slopes of various difficulty here. The drop between the top and the bottom are 790 meter. The center are usually open between early december and may. You need regular skiing/snowboard equipment. But if you don't want to bring this with you, you can rent it on the ski center. It may be a bit expencive, but you will have a day with lots of fun! Remember to bring a lot of warm clotes. Winter in Norway can be cold!
