the hostel on the hill
This hostel is a large youth and family hostel with 220 beds in 52 rooms located in a white building. It's quite a large place with a nice garden. Breakfast is included. Considering its size, I was surprised that there was no cafeteria.
Unique Quality: The hostel was very friendly and with plenty of Norwegian families stopping en route to the north... clean and with comfortable beds - however I do not remember it as convenient to the city centre.

Nice hostel
The place is nice and clean. Membership is 100 NOK, something you'll saved when you've stayed for 4 nights in any hostel in the chain.
Unique Quality: Nice view of the eastern part of the town.

Hostel at Rosenborg
For a low-budget/ backpacker travel Trondheim Vandrerhjem (hostel) is an alternative.
NKR 440,- for a single room with privat bathroom and breakfast included. Simple, no luxury, but clean and OK if you are satisfied with this standard. The hostel has a TV room and a nice reception. Cooking facilities. Linen/sheets are not included (+kr. 50,-)
It's located at some distance from the immediate downtown of Trondheim, you can go by bus, and then walk for some five minutes. To be honest, I might consider a hotel once again, it doesn't have to be much more expensive in the end if you find a good deal.
