24 June 2008. From Fløro we drove eastward to Eikefjord and from there we turned south to Austvik. We visited the open air museum Sunnfjord Museum near the town of Førde. As we were the only visitors there, we got a private tour through a couple of old houses and the former school building. After the tour, we followed the E39 towards the south. We took the ferry from Lavik to Ytre Oppedal across the Sognefjord and ended our journey for that day in Osøyre near Bergen (see our Bergen page).

Very interesting furniture, wooden trunks and household appliances.

I particulary liked this classroom. I remembered how, as a children, we were taught to write with pens that had to be dipped into a small container holding ink (I guess that is why pens like that were called 'dip pens' in English). We called them 'kroontjespennen' in Dutch because of the crown shaped tip of the pen. In this picture, the holes in the desks in which these containers would fit can be seen too. I know this may seem a piece of ancient history, but that was little more than 40 years ago!

I also remembered that it was always a special honour for the pupils to be allowed to handle the big jar of ink with which the smaller containers were filled.
