There may be lodges and private bb housing available in Porsgrunn beyond the two listed on my tip page, but I certainly didn't discover any. Other alternatives are in Skien just upriver a bit from Porsgunn, where some of the regular chain hotels such as Rica, Rainbow and Comfort are present, 5-6 of them. Better, during summer vacation at least, would be to head toward the seacoast, where there are nice hotels with more flavour and flair of coastla life and activities located in Brevik and Langesund. See e.g. www.badeparken.no and www.korvetten-hotell.no
Skien-located hotels are in the vicinity of th national literary treasure Henrik Ibsen's birth place. Interesting to focus on this if you're there. Brevik-Langesund located hotels have coastal activities and some of the best deep sea fishing on the Skagerak coast. They'll help you organise that.

Hotel Vic, Porsgrunn by Saagar Too expensive for what they offer. Business clientele oriented. We were offered room for NOK 800pp double occupancy. Did not stay...
Very central location with walking distance to just about anything in Porsgrunn, save the sindustry area. And I think most people who stay here are here on business - linked to Herøya and Rafnes industries. Also closely linked with the Trade Union center (Folkets Hus & LO), just across the road. Irony that the working class occupies the best hote in town... Closes down two months during summer. Nedre Jønholt Gård by Saagar In search of a place to stay in Porsgrunn? You'll run into the same trouble as I did. There is only one hotel in town and that charges an astronomical sum for overnights - based on their monopoly position... Then there is this: Nedre Jønholt Gård, an old farmhouse/compound combined with customs director's home squeezed in by the city. Apparently a farm and settlement of some importance in the near past, there is no more farmland left and the current owners operate the place as a bed and breakfast accommodation cum family party catering place.
A very nice farmhouse, close to the main shopping streets and river. Walking distance to the porcellain factory, the main shopping centre, restaurants and the main street and river front. Conveniently located in relation to Herøya industrial area, too. Very friendly and helpful owners/managers. The accommodation is in (past) family rooms, spacious and comfortable, with a kitchenette and all house facilities available. Food served is a hearty Norwegian breakfast all you can eat smørgårdsbord type of thing. Two of us paid NOK 600 for a one-night stay. That's half of single-person rate at the other option in Porsgrunn. The creative owner family makes and sells some interesting handicrafts, wooden cabinets etc., too.
