Clarion Collection With

Great hotel, excellent location.

I wasn't sure what to expect at this hotel - and had a very pleasant surprise, it was really good.

I had a single room which was spacious and had a superb harbour view over to Tromso bridge, the Arctic Cathedral and the cable cars. The room was very clean and had a mini bar, fridge, tv with English channels, trouser press. The only thing missing was a kettle but as hot and cold drinks are available from the dining room 24/7 that wasn't really a problem.

The bathroom (shower only) was quite large and clean, and the hairdryer supplied was a decent one, unlike most hotel hairdryers.

The dining room was quite large, overlooking the harbour and with an additional outside terrace. Good selection of breakfast choices. Nice touch in the afternoon when a waffle station is set up in the dining room for guests to make their own waffles. There isnt a restaurant evening menu to choose from, but an evening buffet is available from 6pm with soup, salads and a hot dish. The buffet food is good quality and even as a vegetarian I enjoyed soup and a pasta salad on the one evening I was at the hotel. (I was out on trips the other evenings or I would definitely have eaten in again). As eating out is expensive locally, having the option of eating at the hotel is a good option to have. A wide choice of hot and cold drinks, plus fresh fruit, are also available in the dining room 24/7.

Check in / out was easy with efficient and welcoming reception staff.

There is a sauna and steam room on the top floor but I didnt have time to visit so can't comment on it. There is also a secure storeroom where you can leave your luggage, handy to use after checking out if you have a later flight.

The hotel location is excellent, overlooking the harbour and just a minutes walk to the main street and shops. The airport bus stops a couple of minutes away outside the Rica hotel.

I was very pleased with this hotel but I have to say I am puzzled by the apparent 2-star rating (some sites rate it higher). I would say this hotel is at least a 3 star (perhaps the lack of a 'proper' restaurant is the reason). I plan to return to Tromso next year and will definitely stay at the Clarion Collection With again.

Unique Quality: The hotel has various items of maritime history dotted about, giving an interesting touch. The slightly strange hotel name is also down to a maritime theme - being named after Norwegain sea captain Richard With who came up with the idea of starting a steam ship service to link northern and southern Norway which became the Hurtigruten service (so now you know!).
