  • Business Class room at Radisson SAS Tromsų - Tromsų

I stayed at Radisson SAS Tromsų in September 2007. The hotel has recently been renovated, and a new wing has been opened - the old part of the hotel is connected to the new one through covered glass bridges. Radisson SAS now has 269 rooms, and the hotel has (like most other large Tromsų hotels!) a great location right in the centre of town. The airport bus stops right outside the hotel, and the Hurtigrute / coastal voyager quay is a 30-second walk away.

We had a business class room in the new wing, facing the harbour (the views from our room weren't that great, though). Our room was very large, light and airy - parquet floors, modern and somewhat minimalistic decor - I guess it was supposed to be quite stylish but I don't think I'd want to hire their interior decorator. Anyway, amenities in the Business Class room include a Nespresso coffee machine (nice!) and a quite large flatscreen TV with lots of channels. Free WiFi. Sofa and table, an additional seating area with a couple of chairs, and a work desk. Bathrobe (Just one! In a double room. Odd.) and slippers, and the bathroom does have a bathtub ("shower only" in many Norwegian hotels). There's a large closet covering one wall - the closet looks really good, with pretty glass panels and all - but the thing is, there's light inside it and the light *can't be switched off*, so it keeps the entire room rather light at night! We phoned reception on our first night, asking how to switch the light off - and were told by a rather surly member of staff that nope, quite impossible. Fascinating!

Among the minibar snacks you'll find a packet of stockfish, and a small reindeer sausage - reminding you of the fact that you are indeed in the Arctic. ;o)

The buffet breakfast was quite nice, some hot foods plus the usual selection of breads, crispbread and crackers, cereals, fruit, yoghurt...

A nice hotel, but a few glitches, like the closet design and the fact that the maids apparently forgot to clean our room on our second night!

  • A very comfortable hotel. We upgraded to ensure we had the specific view we wanted and were delighted with the result - the upgrade charge was very modest. If you are staying for more than one night, as with most hotels now, rooms are cleaned and towels replaced only when requested by leaving appropriate message on door/bathroom; simple enough process.

Decor was fine, if somewhat unspectacular, and the room was well laid out giving the impression of space and light.

Norway is very expensive for the traveller, especially in terms of food and drink so take full advantage of an awesome breakfast menu (served 7-11 w/ends and 7-10 weekdays). We were not inspired by the restaurant position (overlooking a side street) or pizza offering so chose not to eat in the hotel in the evening, that doesn't mean it was bad - we just didn't try it.

The top floor contains a hidden gem. There are skiing, running and cycling machines, all quality equipment with settings for HR, distance, time, intervals, resistence etc etc. Next to this is a small, comfortable lounge laid out in a ships deck style and beyond this two sauna's (one male and the other - unsurprisingly - female). Disappointing we couldn't 'sauna' together but excellent views through a massive porthole across the habour to the Tromsdalen Kirke, more commonly known as The Artic Cathedral, and the mountains beyond.

In four days (a long weekend) we didn't see another person use this facility.

The staff were very helpful and friendly throughout. The Reception staff gave advice on directions to museums for example, booked trips and arranged taxis while the room and waiting staff were very attentive to detail and service. I have no trouble recommending this hotel but do remember Norway is expensive so this is not the cheapest hotel you would find in Tromso but I would suggest one of the best based on discussions with fellow travellers.

We travelled in Jan 2009 to see the Northern Lights.

I went here for a conference and stayed 2 nights. The room was small, but clean and had all the necessary amenities.

Interestingly enough, the minibar offered some "traditional" food, like dried fish and raindeer beef jerky - You won't find this in southern Norway.

We were upgraded to a business room, which meant we had complimentary
slippers and bath robes. An excellent central location with easy walkable access to all of Tromso's highlights.

The bed was big and comfy but there wasn't much wardrobe space.

Excellent views overlooking the water, the bridge and the mountains.

Nice buffet breakfast too. Three kinds of sauces for your herring!
