Tønsberg has allways been a seafarers city , it used to be whaleing , but the last whaleoilcookery left from here in the 60`s. But the city is still in the oil buisnes now we are building oil production platforms.

"The oldest town in Norway!!!"

Tønsberg is still the oldest town in Norway. In the last decades there have been several attempts to remove the town from this glorious position, but all attempts have failed! No town in Norway have so far managed to provide older historic evidence of existence.

"Slottsfjellet - Tønsberg's landmark"

Slottsfjellet (litt. Castle Mountain) with its tower (Slottsfjelltårnet) is the landmark. It can be seen from quite a distance and was the location for the Mideveal castle Tunsberghus. From here the regional kings reigned the area.

"Summertime!!!"

Almost everytime I meet someone for the first time and I tell them I come from Tønsberg, they reply something like: "Oh, I've been there! It's such a nice place!"
You see, here in Norway, people know Tønsberg as the ultimate SUMMER town. (If they came during winter, I'm not sure they would be impressed :-) ) As the town is right on the Oslo fjord, there are loads of seaside activities during summer. We have some very nice beaches, and one of the Tønsbergers' favorite summer passtime is to go with their small (or LARGE) cabin cruiser out to one of the islands outside town.

"Tønsberg"

Tønsberg is Norways oldest city , already in 871 the story writer Snorre Sturlason mentions Tønsberg.The viking king Håkon Håkonson built the forthified castle on Slottsfjellet , a 63 m high mountain in the middle of the city, this were Norways largest forthefied castle during the middle ages.
Tønsberg were one of three Hansa towns in Norway , with its own Hansa office , and good tradingconections to Rostock.The large pest Svartedauen (Black death) hit Tønsberg hard , so in 1503 the castle were attacked plundered and burnt down and in 1536 the city were laid completely in ashes in the big cityfire.However the city recovered and around 1840 they had the biggest merchantfleet in Norway.

"Slottsfjellet"

This tower were build on the mountain Slottsfjellet when the city celebrated its 1100 year jubileum.Remains of the old castle are found around it.

"The summercity"

Tønsberg with the surrounding islands , Nøtterøy , Tjøme , Brøtsø . Hvasser ,etc.Have become recreationarea for Oslo , and the population increases a lot during summer and week ends. It is a very lively city with many pubs , bars and nightclubs , especially the waterfront is popular.
