Camping 'U Michala': Nice camping near primeal forest

We had a wonderful stay here!
The lady who runs it speaks only polish, but that's true of most people here.
Nice clean showers & toilets. There's a place to sit & eat if you have no chars of your own
You can use a washing machine, and rent bikes for a few zloty.

downside: not a lot of shade if it's really hot in summer.

One of the quitest places i've seen in Europe.

Jawor: Private - room to let

House we staid was next door to one of the huge hotels that chocked the life out of Bialowieza.
The owner was very nice and helpful. We rented two bedrooms ( one with specious bathroom). We had also full usage of the kitchen, back yard picnic table and parking was on premises.

Rooms were clean and the owner was very accommodating.

Gawra: Great place to stay

Rooms very well decorated and very comfortable! Good food!

You really feel like you are in a national park without really camping in the forest.

Ostoja: Ostoja inside

The Ostoja hotel (see my previous tip for more detail) belongs to the forestry inspectorate and is used by hunting parties and guests of the forestry after they have visited Bialowieza. As they often have drinks and parties in the common living room till late at night, you'd better make sure your room does not adjoin it. However, the living room opens onto a balcony where, being the only visitors there, we could spend the evenings until we were spotted by the mosquitoes.
The picture is of the living-room. Some people may like it - I call it barbarous. That fellow on the floor would have been much happier in the forest there.

Ostoja: A hunting lodge/hotel near Bialowieza

The hotel is situated at Gruszki on the edge of the primeval forest of Bialowieza. The rooms are small but comfortable with a shower ensuite. The place is used by hunters for their gatherings so make sure they have rooms free in advance. There is a kitchen in the basement with all the facilities. When there are more guests, full board is available but what they offered looked very basic for the price. Don't count on shopping nearby. We could get little food and nothing that could be cooked even at the nearest bigger place, Narewka.
To view the house inside, see another of my tips.

Complete peace and quiet if you visit the place off the hunting season. Pleasant surroundings, closeness to the forest, which unfortunately also means some insects (flies, mosquitoes etc.) House martins' nests under the eaves and a stork's nest on the electric pole next door. Possibility of walks to a less wild part of the forest past the other end of the village.

Bed and Breakfast, Halina Szkuta, Teremiski: B&B at Teremiski

We discovered the place on our way back. Hungry after our stay at the nearby Gruszki, we were passing Teremiski - a village amidst the forest- when we saw the sign B&B and our hearts started to beat faster - there was some food to be had at last. And what food! Home-baked bread of two kinds, home-made sausage, cottage cheese and local honey were all at our disposal. We couldn't believe our luck. And to top it all, the warm reception, the hospitality of a kind we had never met with anywhere else. We bought some of the wonderful bread to take home with us. We were shown the rooms and will certainly stay there in the future.

The village is situated in the middle of the forest, great opportunities for forest walks. Close to Bialowieza. Fantastic home-made food available, persuade the landlady to provide full board. Very friendly hosts.
The adult children of the hosts speak a little English - phone at weekends when they may be there.

DWOR SOPLICOWO (Soplicowo Mansion): After the old Polish nobility fashion

We didn't stay at this hotel as it was three times more expensive than what were prepared to pay. Plus we DID want to stay with the local people and were not looking for hotel-type facilities in a place like Bialowieza close to the National Park and primeval forest! :-)
But if you need some more luxury then I guess this would be a good choice - it just looks lovely! And the Jankiel's Inn is a part of the Soplicowo complex (see my Restaurant tip).

A double room is at 220 zl ($55) which is probably OK for a hotel with and old Polish nobility ambience :-)
Check their pricing and some room photos here.

POD GRUSZA - continued: You get to see the simple village life

It looked like our guesthouse owners gave up farming and breeding, and their only source of income is the tourist business.
Their neighbours, however, still keep horses... hm, maybe also for tourists as sledding in winter is extremely popular in Bialowieza.

If you stay with the local people, not the hotels, you get to see the simple life there, the old wooden stables, the timber cut finely and prepared for winter, etc. We were very fond of this little foal at the neighbour's, but he seemed to like us only for a moment - he stared at us but then turned away when one of us finally got the camera out ;-/

POD GRUSZA - continued: Candle light supper in Bialowieza?

The guesthouse place has two reasonably big common rooms in which a group of people can spend time together on a cold or rainy evening. It's a great facility if you come with a big group of friends or colleagues!

It was our last night before leaving. We had grilled sausages earlier on, and then we bought enough beer to last us to the middle of the night, we played some music from our notebook and we danced. Gee we even did karaoke! All that and the light from a few candles that I bought at the Hajnowka Orthodox Church made this evening quite an unforgettable one. The next day we all had sore throughts from singing out loud!

POD GRUSZA - continued: Beer session under the thatched roof

The table under the thatched roofing in the yard was where we set up our drinks and side dishes for the roast wild boar feast (see my Restaurant tip).

I could see some revival of the thatching technique... Check the Soplicowo accomodation tip and the Jankiel's Inn tip. Maybe it is done mainly for tourists but I'm glad it is done at all! There's some chance the craft will survive :-)

Sorry this is only a smal picture, it is a section of a larger photo that I've censored ;-D

POD GRUSZA - continued: Big, neat yard

I think the picture shows maybe only one-third of the yard there. It is actually so spacious that we could play volley-ball right in the middle and we were not disturbing anybody.

Shame the Dutch guys didn't want to join in! ;-)

In one corner of the yard there is a grill that the owner gladly prepares for you if you want to grill your sausages and meat. We did that once when it got cold and raining. We were lucky the local grocery shop was at the other side of the street almost opposite the guesthouse!

POD GRUSZA guesthouse: Stay with the local people

We were very happy to have this particular type of accommodation - you stay with the local people and simply make friends with them. We liked the owners so much that we invited them to our roast wild boar gig! (see my Restaurant tip). And when their daughter's little puppy was lost, we came out into the village for search - and we found it at the Jankiel's inn! The little chap wanted to join the wedding reception there, hehe!

These particular owners have three houses to let while they live in another one. The rooms are modest but clean and cosy, and the wooden furniture is made by the local artisans. Each room has its own brand-new tiled bathroom, something you rather don't expect when looking at the simple wooden houses.

Price per person is 35 zl ($9) from May to Sep. and it goes down to 30 zl outside these months. But it goes up to 60 zl ($16) for New Year's Eve and long weekends (that usually include a holiday), and that's what we paid on the long Corpus Christi weekend in 2003!

There is a little pond and a shed with a stork's nest on it. The Bialowieza forests start only 400m away, and the picturesque little Narewka river valley is just 200 m away. Perfect location for exploring the area and the National Park!
The owners will help you organise your time, rent bikes for you or cook you a meal if you want to eat in. They also allow tourists with tents - there were a few Dutch guys tenting while we were there.

Check my next tips about this place.
