Sopot or Gdansk?

by manfromdelmonte

I am coming to Poland from the UK for 5 nights in August? I Was hoping to go to Sopot and Gdansk, is it best to stay at one of them and just go to the other for the day or have say 2 nights in Sopot and 3 in Gdansk? If I went to Sopot first, how would I get there from the airport? taxi? if so how much roughly would it cost from Gdansk airport to Sopot? Are hotels much more expensive in Sopot than in Gdansk?

There are numerous ways of getting from Gdansk airport into the city. Look here on the airport wesbite in English;

http://www.airport.gdansk.pl/#/passenger/arrival1/transfer

From Gdansk Glowny railway station you can easily take a train to Sopot. Times and info in English here:

http://rozklad-pkp.pl/?q=en/node/143

or use the excellent bahn.de, which gives times and details for almost all European trains:

http://www.bahn.com/i/view/overseas/en/index.shtml

Fares are not quite so easy to find, but Polish railway fares are very reasonable indeed so you need not be concerned.

I can't advise you on taxi fares or on how long to stay in either place, I'm afraid.

For hotels in both places have a look at www.booking.com It's a reliable site used by many VT-ers, with honest guest reviews (you can't post a review unless you've completed a stay booked through the site), good rates and mapping.

your arriving in high season so dont expect bargains....how and where you stay depends on your preference....maybe split your time between the two....if you into history and old stuff, then gdansk is best....if you like the sun and surf and like to hit the bars and nightclubs, then sopot is better....both are supurb places....dont miss oliwa in between for one of the best park/monastary and church complex in poland....5 minutes by bus from sopot....you might even try for a day trip to torun or the marlbork castle....both best from gdansk

Think I may have 3 days in Gdansk and 2 in Sopot, what sort of prices will I be looking at for a hotel in Sopot on average?

Have a look at www.booking.com

The site lists around 61 hotels in Sopot. That will give you a good idea of hotel prices.

I would definitely stay in Sopot because it has great night life. I would go to Gdansk to see it once or twice during the day or/and evening. It looks nice right after the sun set.
Sopot is a place to be 24h a day :-)

you can take local train from Sopot station to Gdansk Glowny station. It is cheap and frequent.

Travel Tips for Sopot

Relax, chill out, take it easy...

by gosiaPL

Sopot is not a place to hurry arround in, especially when you get to the pier. Lots of people sit down on the benches in the pier or go our to the pier's narrow arm for more privacy. Just sitting there and breathing in the sea air feels good. Or you can go to the tip of the pier's arm to watch seagulls or the people on the crazy banana ride... Whatever you do there feels good! And there's enough trains back to Gdansk so no worry :-)

Crazy banana ride!

by gosiaPL

Watch out, you may spontaneously want to go on the crazy banana ride! All's going well until the boat turns and people fall off the banana :-) Everybody's wearing safety jackets so they are safe.
If you want a more comfortable ride, you may choose to sit in the boat.

The Monciak pedestrian street

by gosiaPL

The Monciak is a common nickname for the main pedestrian area in central Sopot, a street called Bohaterow Monte Cassino (Heroes of M.C. - to commemorate the Polish soldiers who fought in the victorious battle of Monte Cassino, Italy during WWII). You reach it within a few minutes from the train station and it runs straight towards the Molo pier.
It's the place to go shopping, pick one of the restaurants or cafes, listen to street musicians, sit down and watch people go by. It's a vibrant place at night too!

The Drunken House

by Gosia78

The Unvertical House also called the Drunken House was built in 2003. this eccentric style was based on the architecture of Antoni Gaudi. Inside you will find cafeterias, restaurants and shops. Worth a visit inside.

The Beach...

by coceng

I could also escaped to the beach area as I was walking. Just watching people lying in the sun.

This is the beach in the north of Poland where it attracts many holiday-makers from nearby Germany & Denmark.
