Grand Hotel is situated next to the pier and the beach where you can walk and relax. In December there may be storms on the Baltic which should add some excitement to your stay. The obvious things to visit are the Old Town in Gdansk and the Cathedral and park in Oliwa (try to attend an organ concert there). Check the pages of other VT-ers for more attractions. I don't think the water-taxi will be available in December. The services of the one from Hel to Gdynia were suspended already in September. There is a link on my Hel page where you can find more information. There will probably be no boat trips to Hel or even Westerplatte but you can take a train trip to the end of the peninsula and back. For attractions in the vicinity of the Tri-city see my Puck, Wladyslawowo,Jastarnia, Kuznica, Hel, Krokowa and Wdzydze Kiszewskie pages.

Have a great time!

My partner and I were in Gdansk last weekend. We stayed in the city but on the Sunday got the train to Sopot. The train journey takes 20 mins and they run around every 15 minutes all day and most of the night. The Grand Hotel looked lovely, it has great views from the Pier. If you walk along about fifteen minutes to the left of the pier (ie the other side of the Pier to the hotel) there is a lovely bar on the beach, not sure what it was called, but it is in two bits, and sells food and drinks, very cheap drinks! The way you will recognise it is there is childs roundabout ride on the beach in front of it. The bar also sea type decorations hanging down. The drinks were very cheap and it seemed very popular with the locals, and would definately recommend a drink there!

Have a fantastic time, you will love it!

I am off to prague and bratislava next week, but secretly wish i was going back to Poland again!

Regarding the post above, I meant so say if your facing the pier, go to the right and that is where the bar is I recommended!

Hi there

I am glad you had a great time. I went to Krakow two Christmas ago and had a fantastic time. Went to the concentration camps and that was very moving and sad.

I am in Bratislava at the moment, fly back tomorrow. Spent a few days in Prague which was nice, but unfortunately there are too many tourists now and it has been spoilt.

Kind regards.

Travel Tips for Sopot

The green square before the pier

by gosiaPL

Just before you reach the pier, you'll find yourself in Plac Zdrojowy, a nice green square with benches, ice-cream stands, cafes and restaurants. It's another place to hang around, if you're bored with the sea view. You see people of all ages there: teenagers, young people, families with little children, older people who come to Sopot's health spas... We sat there for a little while and I got a kick out of a funny water sprinkler in the shape of a flower as it "danced" to the pressure of the water. The square is surrounded by an arcaded wall and there's a lot to explore under the arcade. There was a temporary internet cafe by wp.pl, one of the most popular Polish websites and free e-mail providers. Click for the other photos here.

St. George Church

by Gosia78

St. George Church was built in the neo-gothic style between 1899-1901 and up to 1945 it was on evangelic church. Inside there is a figure of Holy Mary of Czestochowa (a copy of the most precious Polish image of the Holy Mother of Jesus) which until 1971 was a board the Polish transatlantic liner, Batory.

Funky place

by acemj

The Centrum Rezydent shopping center about halfway down Monte Cassino is a pretty funky building from the outside. The building's skin looked warped and funky, but inside you'll find a normal little shopping mall with some shops and restaurants. The weather was too nice outside for me to spend much time indoors, but on a bad weather day, this would be an ideal escape.

Grand Hotel

by Raimix

Grand Hotel is on the right on the beach of Sopot, could be nicely admired from pier. It is art deco style structure, functioning from 1927. As it is written at advertisements, it has its own casino, private beach, indoors swimming pool and so on. Actually such hotel shows the richness and popularity of resort.

My Last Photo ...

Okay, at the Tourist Office, enquired if it was possible to walk along the sea to reach Gdynia. I was told it's possible but it would be a long walk.

I decided to do just that. Beside, it's a long way to walk back to the train station & took the regional train to Gdynia anyway.
