Entrance of the mine
This is the entrance of the mine. When you arrive, it´s just an ordinary building. But it looks SO BEAUTIFUL when you leave the mine and meet the sunlight again!!!
I can´t imagine how it was to work in a mine the whole day...

I have read that there is a lift to take people up to the surface at the end of the visit, but can one take a lift down? I am going with a disabled friend who can't manage stairs. Information on this would be much appreciated
I hope it's not too late. I don't think it should be a problem, but you should contact them and ask: http://www.kopalnia.pl/site.php?action=site&id_site=169&id_language=2&site_location=3&deparment_change=true&
From what I've seen there's only limited tour a person in a wheelchair can do, most walkways are uneven and not suitable for wheelchairs. The regular tour takes three hours, that's three hours of walking. I think you better email them. Good luck.

In the mine you can explore the subterranean world of labyrinthine passages, giant caverns, and underground lakes.
There are lakes Bessel, lake Weimar and ponds in the chambers of Erazm Baracz and Jozef Pilsudski.

Queen Kinga decided to serve the God instead of living in luxury Royal Wawel Castle in Krakow and she entered Roman Catholic convent.
She became the patron of miners and then she was blessed.
To honour her great serving to God miners built Kinga Chapel in salt rocks.

The first wells (to dig salt rocks) were built not before the Middle Ages. Why? Because the superficial resources of salt were almost exhausted. So people started to look for the salt (which was "white gold", sth like oil - dark gold - now hehe) underground.
